Bullard SS rifle

A very good friend made me a offer I just couldn't refuse and I now have a Bullard sporter in .45/70. It's a large frame take-down with a Springfield military rear sight. While the overall external finish is worn, the bore is in excellent condition and the action is tight. This is the only Bullard SS I've ever seen (very occasionally we see the Bullard repeaters here in Oz) so I'm not very familiar with the action. Looks to be very well made & SMOOTH!! one question.....how strong is the action?

It is, basically, a rolling block, with smaller surface engagement than the big Remington rollers.  I would limit it to Trapdoor load intensities if it was mine.

My own Bullard single shot is the small frame takedown in the mighty .38-45 Bullard caliber.  I make cases from cracked-neck .30-40 Krag shells and limit the loads to blackpowder and mild smokeless equivalents.

With all the exotic antique designs that have been revived, I wonder why somebody hasn’t tried to replicate the Bullard action.  It is very finely and precisely made.  There’s a feeling of solidity in opening and closing the action that is not there even in stronger falling-block designs, all of which have a sense of free-fall at some point in the action cycle.  I remember a reviewer in Shooting and Fishing cautioning the readership that the action isn’t meant to resize oversized shells, and I could readily see how somebody could come to that conclusion.

Congratulations on your find.  The repeater was just the single shot with a longer receiver and a rack-and-pinion mechanism to load the chamber from the magazine.  You have all the important stuff right there. Smiley

you have one of the finest American single shots ever made in my opinion? Very smooth. They were very well designed and fitted I owned one in 32-40 in a solid frame, which I regretfully traded off. My guess on the strength would be comparable to Remington rolling block. Do you have the book on Bullard rifles by Scott Jamison? It is the definitive work on the subject.

I thought I had seen a Bullard casting set is available, or was available.  Rodney, was it you that had them?

The small-frame models were chambered for the .32-40 Winchester/Marlin and .38-45, the large for a Bullard-designed cartridge in the more powerful .40-60, .40-75, .45-70 and .45-85 calibers. On special order the latter was also available in .50-90 and .50-115.

A .40-75 large frame (switchable barrel) single shot - the wood has been replaced.

Impossible to find .40-75 Bullard ammo but you can also fire .40-65 in it.

Bob no it wasn’t me. There was a fellow that did some repeating Bullard parts. Some of the parts Casting would work for but The links, the Block, etc. would need some precision machining

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Likely the reason the Bullard hasn't been cloned is the same reason the company went out of business, the cost of making them. Bullard rifles were very expensive, which is why we see so few. It was impossible for Bullard to compete with the larger companies who sold their rifles for about half the price of a Bullard.

Definitely consider getting the Jamieson book. The second edition covers the first, and has updates, the author catalogs the known serial numbers. If your serial number isn't listed, he may still be interested in knowing about your rifle.

Thanks, I did caseharden it.  I think the colors are even nicer in person.  If you ever make your way to Saskatoon stop in and I will show you my little casehardening setup.

I can no longer make the trips through to the BPCR shoots at Bethune.
Unfortunately health restrictions mean I can no longer travel.
I would have loved to have stopped in.
