Austrian / German Rifle

Acquaintance brought me this rifle, I don't know much about it other than being Austrian made, not even sure of that. At first, I thought it was percussion but no, its an angled firing pin. It has a rather unique (to me anyway) built in, flip up aperture sight and double set triggers. Under side of the barrel is marked 11.5 and "450 Alaskan", 742.21 and some kind of a proof house crest. 29" barrel, bore / groove measure .439 / .457. I presume the 11.5 is the original metric groove dia. ? Current owner had it re-chambered to the 450 Alaskan, for ease of getting brass.

He should have never done that. You can find or make brass for almost everything out there. That gun wasn't designed for such a round. Hope he doesn't pick it out of his teeth one day...

Owner is a local (to me) fellow of German heritage. He bought it off of some Austrian "gun trader" web site then went to the trouble of importing it into Canada.
I really like the flip up aperture sight, integral to the action, fore end held on with one of those tapered cross pins  (terminology escapes me ATM), double set triggers - the thing just drips with craftsmanship !
Owner does intend to take her hunting.

This style of rifle was and still is popular in Austria. I don't remember it's German name but it can be found, using a wide assortment of actions.
It was a frequent style chosen by the Ferlach gunsmithing students as their rifle project and examples were made into this millennium.
Attached are two Austrian examples.
The top rifle is original and chambered for the the 8.15X46R cartridge. It uses a top lever action with two under-lugs.
The bottom rifle came to the US with only the back end. It uses a Jones action. I made the front end and chambered it for 357 Mag/38 Sp.

The upper one is a "Kipplaufhahnstutzen" the lower a "Kipplaufhahnbuechse"

In the 1980's I drooled over a new one like the upper for 2+ years at the Frankonia store in Munich. Never could raise the money for it.

That's not a tang sight. It's a flip up aperture through which you look at the barrel sights. It focuses the light, resulting in sharper sight image. Intended for when slow deliberate aiming is called for.

Otto. Your making the front end really got my attention! It appear that you made a monoblock to fit the action and then adapted a octagon barrel to it! Righteous!

Amen!  That is an "accident?" going somewhere to happen. Is there any way to undo it?

The current owner is underloading his .450 Alaskan rounds.  But who knows what someone in the future will try to shoot.

So my first question is could the chamber be sleeved and recut to something more suitable?  My second is, are there stamps that indicate the original chambering and whether the rifle was proved for smokeless?

I searched hard and discovered the ad was removed, probably sold.

This is the text: Dieses Inserat existiert leider nicht mehr.
Hier sind verfügbare Inserate der gleichen Kategorie:

If you search google images for "Nowotny Ischler stutzen" you can see the rifle.
