length of bullet starter?

I'm making a bullet starter for use with a false muzzle (.32-40). My question is: what's the average depth into the barrel that the device should put the bullet before removing the starter and reverting to the ramrod? Thanks.

I measured a .32-40 LM barrel that I have and the starter rams the bullet just under 2" into the barrel (from muzzle to bullet nose tip). It's an aluminum starter, including the starter rod. You don't want to have to seat the bullet too far into the barrel as the heel of your hand would quickly tire.
I also have a .38-50 Rem Hep ML barrel that I've shot quite a bit. It's starter seats the bullet just under 2 1/4 into the barrel. It has a steel starter rod.
Both of those rifles have false muzzles that are approximately 1" long.
Hope that helps

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Both my Pope and Schoyen starters are around 3.5" depth to seat. So with about a 1" false muzzle the bullets end up at 2.5" deep.
