Stevens 44 - is this strange?

I've never been inside a 44 Stevens before I got this one.  When I pull the lever and breech block I see the bushing shown in the pic.  It's pulled out of the lever so it'e more easily seen but fits flush when installed.

DeHaas' book says there's a screw through the lever at that point but doesn't mention the bushing.

This is the same rifle I asked about earlier with the custom double set triggers.   Is this another "custom" addition?  Or?

Speculations welcome.

Thanks

The early model 44's used screws for the lever and breech block.  The later models used a pin that Stevens called a pivot with a retaining screw on the right side of the frame.
Your rifle looks absolutely correct from the factory.  It is a little unusual that the lever bushing came out just by removing the lever and breech block assembly.

No speculation needed.  The bushing is required to fill the hole.  The hole is the only way to machine for the extractor pocket and extractor clearance.  So, you could say if it has an extractor set in the lever and in that position it will have the bushing.  The bushing reduces the hole size back to the pin diameter.

I have had a few and always wondered about the bushing. Now I know. You learn something new every day...

I bit more info on the bushing in Stevens guns.  These all have the 6 o'clock extractor.

1. is a favorite.

2. is a 44

3. is a 44 1/2
