C. Sharps Arms. They will be coil spring actions. Some like the flat spring actions, some like the coil spring actions. I like both, but would pick a coil spring action over a flat spring action for various reasons.

Well if it was chambered for a .22 LR I would at least consider cutting one of the walls down to allow easy access to the chamber.

I think there were some conclusions being jumped to in my post.  For starters I do not have a MVA action and probably won't be able to afford one for some time.  So the guys up in Montana can rest easy tonight knowing this.  Second, I was hoping to learn something about the Low and Hi Walls.  I suspect the two actions are identical, save for the material removed from the receiver and breech block on the former.  I guess next time I'll have to qualify my question with a caveat.  However, thanks for the information, especially the item about MVA making Low Walls themselves.  I have not found this on their web site so that kind of proves that the only way one can find things like this out is by asking on forums like this one.  However, next time I will be sure to be more careful in how I do the asking.

Everything you hear on a forum is true is not true. Call MVA.

That sounds pretty ugly!

If your rifle is not in 7.62 and you can't hit what you are aiming at with de-linked machinegun ammo you are a pretender.

You do it - as did Harry Pope and others - to make cartridge loading and removal easier; what the results look like is a secondary consideration, if at all.

That was a common thing to do back when High Walls were cheap, and gunsmiths put .22LR barrels on them. I once owned a beautiful Buhmiller 1885 that had the right side wall cut down to allow easy access to the chamber and cartridge. It always bothered me that it had been done, but just because of aesthetics, not because it was too weak for a .22LR.

It has been said, form follows function, but, can still be done pleasingly.

What is acceptable has to also be viewed by us today by when it was done. Folks today are far more conscious about keeping highly collectible arms in original condition. But if you look at these changes as period modifications, when these guns had very little value, then I think you have to appreciate modifications that were done well, even if they'd never be acceptable if done today.
Since most of us appreciate custom work done in the period, it's something I've come to appreciate, and would never consider changing back to original configuration if the work is well done.
I've actually had guys tell me certain guns had their value ruined because they were built into scheutzen rifles, even when those guns had well known maker's marks on the barrels. First time I heard this was when a local dealer sold me my first Schoyen Ballard and pointed out "some idiot put his name on the barrel" as he handed it to me to consider.

If S99VG wants to use a low wall to build a 22, I can't see a problem. I don't believe he questioned whether to lower one side wall to more easily access the chamber. If he had, the better solution would be to use a receiver that doesn't have that problem. The Ballard is one of them. It is ultimatly S99VG's choice to do whatever he desires with whatever action he chooses. He now has some things to consider when doing so. As he has stated numerous times, he is looking, not doing at this point in time. Because he has asked questions, I am sure he will make good decisions for himself and his rifle.

Marlinguy, I'm not sure I understand your response to my notation? What difference does it make, if an IMPROVEMENT is done PLEASINGLY, today, or one hundred twenty years ago. But more importantly, who gets to make those decisions.

It makes a big difference if it was done 100 years ago vs. today. Custom single shot rifles that were done 100 or more years ago have great collector interest. But the same work done today doesn't have the same interest one done long ago has. Even if the work is a very close copy of what the old gun makers did.
I've seen the prices at big collector shows and seen people walk right by newly built custom single shots, even when priced cheaper. And watch people step up and buy a very similar single shot that was the real deal done long ago.
You can look in the For Sale section here and occasionally see one of these modern renditions at a decent price languish for weeks and know they don't get what the same gun gets if done long ago.
Who makes those decisions are the buyers. Sellers sure don't, and if they do they often don't get purchased.

Maybe to help focus this discussion it could be looked at like this.  A factory original Hi Wall has historical importance all in itself, especially if it a well preserved example.   However, if that rifle was altered, its changed condition could subtract from that importance.  However, if the alteration was made by someone of historical importance, say the likes of Harry Pope, then it picks up an additional level of importance.  The presence of Harry Pope is additive to the rifle as an important artifact.  Now say Mr. Pope happened to have built that rife for Teddy Roosevelt who promptly used it to win the Wimbledon Cup, it gets even more important.  And with increased importance so too goes value.  Unfortunately, most all my meager collection does not and will not ever represent prime examples of factory originals rifles with associations to important people and events.
