Is this the 25-20 SS or 25-20 WCF ? Thinking about buying a rifle so marked.

.25-20 single shot unless someone ran a .25-20 wcf reamer in the chamber.

And if they did rechamber it to .25-20 WCF, at least in my experience the rifle will more than likely only be good for "plinking".

If it still is, as it should be, 25-20 SS, and the barrel is pretty decent them it would be worth playing with. First though, locate some brass. If it doesn't come with some it will be a good bargaining point. You can load it just fine with 25-20 WCF dies and a #10 shellholder.

Stevens never made a gun for the WCF round.

To rechamber to the WCF round, the barrel has to be set back about 1/4 inch.  This is detectable by looking at the distance from the receiver face to the rollstamp.

I assume you mean they never cataloged the .25-20 WCF shell.  But if a buyer was willing to pay for it, I seriously doubt that Stevens wouldn't oblige him.

I'd disagree, Bill.  The WCF round was and is commonly loaded to much higher pressure and thus much higher bolt thrust than the old 44 can handle.  I'd expect they'd have declined.  They did try the Hornet in the '30s, but even the little Hornet "shot loose" in a hurry.

well kinda....The 23 (Sporter) Bolt Actions but it really doesn't count as a Stevens.

Touche.  I should have limited it to the 44.

They might have done it in the 44-1/2 safely.

Actually, I was thinking of rifles built on the 44-1/2 action, because according to my references the early black powder .25-20 WCF cartridges were factory loaded to about 20,000 psi, while the early smokeless rounds were rated at about 28,000 psi.  So couldn't both have been safely handled by a 44-1/2?

Certainly.  The 44-1/2 would easily handle twice the bolt thrust of the 25-20 WCF.

O.P. asked about the 44, and I put my blinders on when I asnwered.

Kinda-sorta, but in actuality the 23-series of rifles were a Savage product. Even though Savage owned Stevens by then they never "badge engineered" that gun like they some other models.

Guess I'm gonna skip this one. Looking down enough rabbit holes as it is. Thanks for the info.
