You are on the road to ruin and disaster.  Just do yourself a favor and send the gun to me and it will be happy with the other couple dozen rolling blocks in my safe.

The little #4 was an entry level boy's rifle, but of very high quality compared to some others. They're beginning to bring some pretty decent money in nice condition, and in .22RF chambering.

When I decided to build 22 for my twins (boy/girl) I hunted for two solid frame Number 4's. The "Target" version is my daughter's in 22 LR. The "Hunting" version is my son's in 22 Mag. It mirrors my 50-70 hunting rifle. When I built them I could not get a LR barrel in the heavy weight so I decided to make the Mag. Sometime I will get around to replacing the original wood since it is in such poor shape.

The original wood actually looks decent to me.

Good score.

I'm a fanatical Stevens partisan, as everybody here knows, but I do admire the solid-frame .32 Long RF #4 that I have.  Excellent materials, machining, fit and finish.

If I had a takedown #4, I'd solder the barrel to the receiver, though.

Agree, I have a takedown 22 L, and the barrel attachment is pretty shaky.  The grandkids shoot it in the cellar........

That is exactly what I did 30 years ago with a .32 cal #4 I set up for my son.  I also converted it to centerfire.  It has worked just fine ever since.

I have a later one with the thumb screw instead of the lever take down.  Will the No 4 shoot loose using blackpowder rounds?  If so why did Remington not change to all solid frames?

When I was considering the construction of the kids' rifles I thought about brazing a threaded ring in the receiver's to mount the barrel since I probably saw 15-20 take-down guns to every threaded ring gun. Decided if I was going to put in new barrels and sights and re-case it only made sense to use a threaded barrel receiver. If you have already or can get dirt cheap a take-down then by all means use them but if you are going to put some effort and money into bringing one back to use go with a non take-down.

There was someone offering a copy of an original tang sight for the No. 4 but I can't remember who nor find a picture in the internet. I had one for a few days but returned it because it did not "lock" into position, thats why I used the Marbles on my daughter's rifle.

There are more #4 takedowns that got loose at the barrel to receiver junction from being constantly taken down, than from ammo shot in them.
The issue with takedowns getting loose has always been from being taken down too often.

Exactly!  The barrel steel is fairly soft and easily deforms after multiple takedowns. They improved the later rifles by changing the design. The later rifles use a round, slotted screw on the left rather than a takedown lever on the right.  Soldering the barrel in place is an easy fix.

Why did Remington not change to all solid frames?

Actually, I think the rifles started out as solid frame guns.  In any case, the change to take-down versions most likely simply reflected that almost every other boy's single-shot back then used that method - i.e., give the people what they seem to want.

US , I am also a fan of Stevens ''Favorites'' tho
I really frown on changing an original rifle.
I would endevour to correct it.
This is the only Remington I own & she is
in beautiful nik.

If I had a takedown #4, I'd solder the barrel to the receiver, though.
