.40-75 Large Frame Single Shot Multi Barrel Bullard.

I suppose you could considerate it a takedown action but I understood it was designed to substitute to a different barrel.

The small-frame models were chambered for the .32-40 Winchester/Marlin and .38-45, the large-frame for a Bullard-designed cartridge in the more powerful .40-60, .40-75, .45-70 and .45-85 calibers.

Is it a Winchester barrel or a Bullard barrel chambered in .32-40 Winchester?

I wonder if the small-frame barrels can be used on the large frame action?

This one does not have original wood.

Yours is a pretty nice original and I never realized they color cased them since all I have seen were blued.

Wow westerner! ... if you were going to have just one nice example of a Bullard single shot, that is it. There is nothing more expensive than original case colors. The Carver tang sight just adds to it.

Congrats !

Thanks Joe. I wanted one for years and when the right one came along I took the hook.   Smiley

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Beautiful Bullard Joe!
I've also hankered for one, but seems I always find something to use up my money on in the meantime.

A great rifle Joe! I would like to have one someday and certainly wouldn't have passed that one by.

From G. Scott Jamieson's book on Bullards. This production listing matches my rifle exactly.
So if the Winchester barrel was installed at a later date, someone went to great lengths to match it back to the original configuration. Or was it special ordered with a Winchester barrel?

It's kind of hard to align the data line with the heading line, but if "C/H" stands for "Case Hardened", then your rifle shouldn't be.

As for the barrel, Stevens is known to have fitted its barrels to other makers' actions, so either Bullard or Winchester might very well have fitted the Winchester barrel originally.

In any case, it's a great rifle!

On count back I read C/H as #3. ?  They had three different types of case hardening?  All the insiders who would know are most likely deceased. The plot thickens...

I, too, should've counted.  So if "3" is the answer, then "C/H" must not mean "case hardened".  Oh, well.
