Interesting so let me ask how did Unertl handle this

Rick

With a rib on the bottom of the tube, and a matching notch in the front ring.

Maybe I'm missing something  the ribs are on  top of my Unertls . Maybe I just have them mounted upside down......😀

No, you're correct on Unertl. My mistake. Unertl was a rib on the top, while others used a rib underneath.

The key to any external adjust scope mount is a three point support system.
Some use a grasshopper spring below and two small buttons above. Others a spring loaded rib above and buttons below.
Rear mounts use some variation of the three point support with one point spring loaded.
This allows constant support as the apparent shape of the scope tube changes from round to ellipse as the scope is adjusted.

I have a number of rear mounts with 4 point systems. I always thought a 4 point was a better setup with two spring loaded plungers so one opposite each elevation and windage adjustment.

I have a pretty rare Belding and Mull scope and rings that adjust elevation and windage on both front and rear rings! It allows far more adjustment than any rear only style rings do.

A circle viewed from any position other than perpendicular becomes an ellipse.
The three point mounts form a plane, so the scope tube would appear as an ellipse in any position other than perpendicular.
A four point mount would certainly work. It is just redundant.

Well they worked... I finally got to the range to shoot my 74 Sharps I have been working on and was pleasantly surprised at both the gun and the scope. My mounts worked great. Very little adjustment to get it dialed in. With a 300 gr bullet and 22 gr of 4198 it got me 1260 fps and a 1 1/2 inch group at 100 yards. The scope moves about 3/4 of an inch travel. The index notch brings it right back to position for the next shot. I have some more load development to do but again everything worked as intended. One day when I figure out how to post a picture I will post some photos.
