Does anyone have any suggestions for starting loads for the 25-20 wcf with a 12" twist barrel using breech seated 98gr. pointy bullets? This is in a CPA.  Many thanks!

The heaviest bullet in the Lee Reloading Manual is for a 90 grain lead bullet for the .25-20 WCF:

A-XMR-2015    11.7 grains (1559 fps) to 13.0 grains (1772 fps)
ACCUR 1680    9.6 grains (1552 fps) to 10.7 grains (1764 fps)
ACC XMP5744  9.0 grains (1474 fps) to 10.0 grains (1675 fps)
ACCUR #9       6.6 grains (1429 fps) to 7.3 grains (1624 fps)

my 25-20 SS is a 1-10 Douglas and I breech seat a 115g Pointed Barnett  bullet with 8g-9g of 4227.
capacity are close enough in the 25-20ss and wcf .I'd start at 8g and go from there.

JerryH here is a champ with his 25-20 WCF and I'd go with whatever he recommended when he chimes in  and ignore mine...

I would be happy to hear Jerry's load suggestions.

Jerry's 5 target record with his .25-20 WCF:

1240 Jerry Hartwig 2015 Modesto, California
        120 grain Mos 10:1 Douglas 20:1 alloy (.25-20 WCF) 20X Lyman Targetspot CPA 44 1/2 AA4100

I used 9.6 grains of H108 with a 122 grain Paul Jones spitzer in a 10:1 twist barrel with a .25 RKS case (more volume than a .25-20 WCF) but it neve shot as well as Jerry's rifle.
I understand they do well if you get them up to 1600 fps.

Unfortunately I have no experience shooting a 25-20 WCF with a 12 twist barrel and 98 gr. bullets. If I did I would be more than happy to share any information I had.

My CPA has a 10 twist Douglas barrel and I use a 120 gr. Mos bullet at 1660 fps (verified on Barry Darr's Ohler system). My charge of AA4100 is the absolute maximum charge for my rifle and I lose cases due to shoulder separation on a regular basis. I would never recommend that anyone use my load data for their rifle. You need to start low and work up slowly.

38_Cal,

My best recommendation for you is to find some Ramshot Enforcer (same exact powder as AA4100) and CCI BR4 primers and then slowly try to work your way up to 1600 fps (if you can get there with no excessive pressure).

You'll need to use R-P brass and a good bullet lube. I highly recommend Javelina Schuetzen Lube which is available from the ASSRA Vice President, Mike Kuzulka. Phone number (920) 382-6418.

You'll run into pressure problems before you get close to 1600 fps with 4227. That may not be what you're trying to do, but thought I would throw that out there.

My experience using 4227 in another cartridge trying to load max was risky. Pressures can spike really fast with the slightest change in charge weight. I decided it was not the best powder for my application.
