Ugly is to the bone.
Here is my newest rat rifle on a very pitted receiver.  Chambered in 32 Miller short with a barrel that has been set back at least 3 times by the previous owner.

That was the barrel Chuck practiced his clutch threading technique on, Jack.  Smiley

And it looks like the flat spring mount dovetail was cut with a hacksaw.  Maybe I should look for the giant nut that was on the end of the barrel when I got it.  It adds character.

Here it is in its original form from Chuck's estate.  The action is now sporting a heavy 28 cal barrel.

What was the nut for?  Or was it a little silencer disguised to look like a big nut? Smiley

There is a 1/2" turned down section at the muzzle and the nut was bored out smooth to be a slip fit just to hold the front sight Unertl style mount it seems.  Wes Turner was familiar with it from when the Canadians came to Tacoma to shoot.

Ron Smith made the muzzles fatter on Canadian Schuetzen rifles than the rest of the barrel because removing the outside of the barrel can actually slightly increase the diameter of the bore.

Removing less metal on the muzzle ensured the barrel would be choked at the muzzle.

Was the nut Chuck's impression of beauty in a single shot?
Kind of short for a bloop tube?
Or his desire for a nutty rifle.

All I'm sure of is that when Bev Pinney owned the rifle there was a nut at both ends.

Jack, there are still some affordable homes out here.

Bev shoots both courses of fire. I've been beat by him at Kenmore (CBA) and Tacoma (ASSRA).

I remember the day at Kenmore when nothing was going right and he was going to open a lead mine at the muzzle as soon as the match was over. He shot a 399, out of 400 possible, and I forget how many X's. No sympathy after that.

We got some fixer uppers for sure. Here is a more deluxe fixer upper. Not currently for sale. This one has all the bells and whistles. Even has an antique fixer upper pickumup truck in the barn.
I been trying to get Jack to move away from Warshington for years.

I am never moving unless I can find a place that my wife wants (salt waterfront) and I want (a 200yd minimum shooting range).  Oh, and it has to be affordable unless I hit the lottery.  Maybe somewhere around Coyle Wa!

No shooting range there Joe.  I suppose I could have put a floating target in the water and skip bullets toward the submarine base.

I used to have a range about two miles South. Directly across from Bangor. I could look at the dry dock when posting targets.

Not sure I would want to wear a suit while farming.  Our 2 acres is enough work for me unless I could have a shooting range.  Maybe I could buy Tommy’s.

The picture was taken on Chuck Bordmans back porch. Before he would let me take the picture he insisted the rug be turned upside down. Said he didn't want his rug to be in a picture with a rifle that ugly.

The rifle by the way, was only shot with 4759 powder when in Ed Browns possession.

The nut was on the rifle when Bev the Canadian owned it. It's a Canadian thing. We wouldn't understand.

Many offhand shooters prefer a rifle with weight forward which helps the rifle drop straight down over the target instead of doing figure eights which your brain has trouble understanding to determine the correct timing for a let off shot.

Possibly Bev was attempting to provide more weight forward on this rifle.

Unfortunately Joe's nut(s) is/are too much for us Senior Schuetzen shooters to be interested to hold up.

Bev use to shoot offhand but quit doing so a number of years ago.
I recall that Bev had separate rifles for shooting offhand and bench.

I checked the Alberta Schuetzen Guild records and the last time he shot offhand was in 2000.

After 2000 I only have bench scores for Bev.

That is probably around the time he sold the rifle but I do not remember if it was his offhand rifle or  former bench/offhand rifle.

By the time I got it, the barrel had been set back at least twice.  More like a carbine instead of a rifle.

So with the barrel set back there was probably a need to replace the weight loss and restore rifle balance  by adding the heavy nut on the end.

Probably works better than having a nut on the other end.

Here is the runner-up.   I call it the Grey Rat.  The barrel was on the pitted receiver for a while and was dubbed the Rat Rifle by Wes.  It shot too well so the 8 groove barrel got a decent French grey receiver.  I dug out the extra long forend a few days back and spent quite a bit of time with sandpaper wrapped around a 1-1/4" wood dowel to get it to fit.  There is a poorly repaired crack that might get cut off depending on what position on the front bag works best. Someday I might even clean up the outside of the barrel.

Rusty Rat 1873 .50-70 Sharps - year of conversion to 1874 parts - has both 1869 and 1874 parts.

Got a bit wet hunting Buffalo in the Cypress Hills.

Rifle bore is almost factory new and no rust on the inside.

Head of screw broken off for the lever spring.
Need to tap out the stub and get new screw.

not a rifle i know but sewer pipe bore abused  rusted Ruger OA that shoots good 'nuff to keep my nice ones in the safe.its not a stainless gun btw,it just has no finish left.

the forcing cone is a sandblasted funnel yet it still shoots

with a bore that bad I'd thought the projectiles would tip and not be stable but the holes are nice and round  Cheesy
