The picture was taken on Chuck Bordmans back porch. Before he would let me take the picture he insisted the rug be turned upside down. Said he didn't want his rug to be in a picture with a rifle that ugly.

The rifle by the way, was only shot with 4759 powder when in Ed Browns possession.

That explains it.  He probably invented the nut on the end of the barrel idea.

The nut was on the rifle when Bev the Canadian owned it. It's a Canadian thing. We wouldn't understand.

Many offhand shooters prefer a rifle with weight forward which helps the rifle drop straight down over the target instead of doing figure eights which your brain has trouble understanding to determine the correct timing for a let off shot.

Possibly Bev was attempting to provide more weight forward on this rifle.

Unfortunately Joe's nut(s) is/are too much for us Senior Schuetzen shooters to be interested to hold up.

I always thought that Bev never shot offhand.  Just bench.

Bev use to shoot offhand but quit doing so a number of years ago.
I recall that Bev had separate rifles for shooting offhand and bench.

I checked the Alberta Schuetzen Guild records and the last time he shot offhand was in 2000.

After 2000 I only have bench scores for Bev.

That is probably around the time he sold the rifle but I do not remember if it was his offhand rifle or  former bench/offhand rifle.

By the time I got it, the barrel had been set back at least twice.  More like a carbine instead of a rifle.

So with the barrel set back there was probably a need to replace the weight loss and restore rifle balance  by adding the heavy nut on the end.

Probably works better than having a nut on the other end.

Here is the runner-up.   I call it the Grey Rat.  The barrel was on the pitted receiver for a while and was dubbed the Rat Rifle by Wes.  It shot too well so the 8 groove barrel got a decent French grey receiver.  I dug out the extra long forend a few days back and spent quite a bit of time with sandpaper wrapped around a 1-1/4" wood dowel to get it to fit.  There is a poorly repaired crack that might get cut off depending on what position on the front bag works best. Someday I might even clean up the outside of the barrel.

Rusty Rat 1873 .50-70 Sharps - year of conversion to 1874 parts - has both 1869 and 1874 parts.

Got a bit wet hunting Buffalo in the Cypress Hills.

Rifle bore is almost factory new and no rust on the inside.

Haven't test fired her yet.

Head of screw broken off for the lever spring.
Need to tap out the stub and get new screw.

Everything else is in excellent working order.

not a rifle i know but sewer pipe bore abused  rusted Ruger OA that shoots good 'nuff to keep my nice ones in the safe.its not a stainless gun btw,it just has no finish left.

the forcing cone is a sandblasted funnel yet it still shoots

with a bore that bad I'd thought the projectiles would tip and not be stable but the holes are nice and round  Cheesy
