Shiloh finish

Print Post
With help from members on another forum, the case colors pictured below are Shiloh's standard finish and not their optional packed hardened/bone and charcoal method.

Although I haven't seen a lot of Shilohs (mostly pictures), these colors look brighter than most. I asked the owner of the rifle about it and he said he does put Birchwood Casey Barricade (formerly called Sheath) on the rifle.

Has anyone used this Birchwood Casey product and would it make the finish shine like this?

I do know there can be variance from gun to gun with case coloring, so I guess it's possible this one just turned out "prettier."  Smiley

Thanks

In my experience -- Yes! -- and it also doesn't show fingerprints easily after being wiped with it.

Not sure how well this shows the difference but the Business Rifle on the left has the standard color cased finish and the Montana Rough Rider has the bone and charcoal pack hardened finish

Birchwood Casey Barricade is also what I use. That’s a can of it behind my Marlin 1889.

I use Old West Snake Oil on both metal and wood on my single shots, and it gives a similar sheen.

Vall,
I also use the Old West Snake Oil and wipe down both the wood and metal when I’m finished using them and putting the rifles back in the vault. I generally use the Barricade for internal parts or the exterior when I’m working on them, especially when to prevent flash rusting.
I use Renaissance Wax on those guns that rarely leave the vault.

I'm another who prefers Renaissance Wax for long-term storage.  I always warm the metal with a hair dryer to improve penetration (a trick I learned from a professional conservator's newsletter).

I've heard good things about Renaissance Wax, but never used it. I use Minn Wax paste, but I use a trick I saw on a Youtube video to make the Minn Wax even better!
I thin the paste wax using boiled linseed oil until it reaches the consistency of butter. It makes it extremely easy to apply, and penetrate wood and metal finishes really well. I use old small Tupperware containers my wife is done with to mix it, and store the excess in.
Here's the link:

Is there a difference in the metal finishing between the two guns. My Shiloh Business Rifle has a somewhat rough finish, I don't think the receiver was polished before it was colored. Not sure how much improvement in the colors could be made with a wax or oil.

I am not aware of any finishe differences in the polishing of the receivers. The Business Rig
Fle has the standard matte finish on the barrel and the Rough Rider has a polished blued barrel

The colors on my 50-90 from C. Sharps are much nicer than on my Shiloh Business rifle. I have put two coats of the Birchwood Casey on the Shiloh and the C. Sharps is without. I will do the C. Sharps tomorrow and see what it then looks like.

FWIW: I was at my new shooting club tonight and there was a guy there with a C. Sharps in 45-110. The colors were terrible. On the right side there was a big blob of blue that looked like what you see after someone welds on a peice of steel. The left side almost looked like it was blued, relatively uniform blue/black color....

Here are the comparisons after two coats on both the C. Sharps and the Shiloh.

How is it applied? Is the overspray safe for the stock finish? Same questions about Old West Snake Oil.

Mike,  The Birchwood Barricade I just spray on a cleaning cloth and use it on the metal. The snake oil I put on a smaller cotton rag and apply on both the metal and wood.
