Dixie Gun Works used to carry a few, but I haven't seen one of their catalogs in over 20 years.

Track of the wolf might have some.

I make my own from steel bar, just bend the curve, weld on any hooks or prongs and grind and file to shape.

Ballards may be weaker,

What are you looking for size or shape wise? I've got a couple Winchester brass castings, and a Farrow style steel.

I’m helping a friend build a Stevens 44 on an action that I’ve had.  Looking for something 4.5 to 4.7 inches, with 4.6 as the target, in steel.  I have him drawing out what he wants in a stock shape and he’s not liking what he is drawing.  I think a change in the buttplate is what is needed.  I’m trying to get him to look at the CPA Stevens or large Winchester styles but was wondering if there were any other offerings out there that I was not aware of.
I find it hard sometimes to get people away from the modern factory chunky, ugly, utilitarian shaped stocks.  But, on the other hand that’s all most have ever seen.
Bob

Vall, I’m not sure what the Farrow looks like.

For butt plate castings you might also try Rodney Storie. He posts on this forum from time-to-time. In addition to butt plates he also offers a line of action castings for several different single shots.
You can contact him at:

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

The Farrow style is the small Swiss buttplate Ballard Union Hills and 3F Fine Gallery used.

Thanks Randy, hadn’t though about Rodney.

Vall, that’s the style I would be looking at, nor sure about him.  What sizes is yours, width and height?  Is it steel?

I have one Ballard farrow style, and one Stevens Farrow style. The Stevens doesn't have the sharp point on top, and is typical Stevens with a more rounded point on top. Both are @4.5" top to bottom, and @1 5/16"-1 3/8" at the widest point. Both are steep repros and have no holes drilled yet. The Ballard is polished out, and Stevens is still as cast, but wont take much sanding to be polished.

Bob,  I bought a Ballard Swiss butt-plate from CPA. It looks and pretty well matches the dimensions Vall gave.

Thanks guys.  Let me see what he wants to do.  I have been studying the CPA plates a little closer…..sometimes I get stuck in a box and have trouble seeing all the possibilities!
