Scope mounting question

At some time during it’s long lifetime, my Highwall had a dovetail cut on it’s top flat 7 1/4” ahead of the rear sight dovetail. As I understand it, this is approximately the correct spacing for scope mounting.
Using cross dovetail scope bases I believe a scope could be mounted utilizing the two existing dovetails. However, the rear dovetail is 5” forward of the receiver. Is this too far forward for eye relief with a Unertal style scope?

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

It might be too far, but you could use wire ties, or duct tape to tape the scope in place where the cuts are, and it would answer the question before you buy bases and find out if it works.

One option would be to use dovetail fillers in the slots and screw or braze a 1/4” thick bar to them and drill and tap the bar for scope blocks with the right spacing.

Thanks guys! I don’t have a scope so can’t check by temporarily fixing it to the barrel.
Jack, that’s an excellent idea!

JKR,
I checked this out on my own Hi Wall, with correctly positioned
Unertl/lyman type bases . One about an inch in front of
receiver ring, and other base 7.2" forward of that.
I marked off the distance to the barrel sight dovetail as
also verified on another Hi Wall, then marked off another 7.25" forward for your other dovetail cut.
I tried moving my Lyman STS forward in the rings far enough
forward for forward ring to reach the 7.25" from barrel sight dovetail.
NO WAY could I "reach my neck" far enough forward so as
to be able to view through the Scope.
I suggest you get the barrel drilled and tapped at
"correct" positions to screw on Unertl/Lyman bases.
See you Sat at Merrill, I will bring my Hi Wall
and the Lino
