Liner Installation with Solder

Up to my old tricks!  Needed a source of even slow heat so after a bit of Trial and Error came up with this setup.  Running of my House Propane.  Found I had to rotate the Barrel while it was getting up to temp. 😊 David

Curious why you don't use acraglass or green loctite?

Somewhat allergic to them.  Also scared of getting halfway through and having the liner lock up.  Last Barrel I did I ran out of Acetylene half way through.  No problem starting again a day later. David

There is a slow cure Loctite cylindrical locker available, which I have used  sucessfully on several occasions. I believe it's #630.

I think it will be a really "Hot Barrel". Got the idea to regulate the Pressure from Semi Auto .22 Target Pistols.  😆 David

P.S....
Happy to have 500 post!  Thanks to all 👍

I tried the solder on liners when I first installed a liner. I switched to 262 Loctite and have not gone back to trying solder. Most of the time I ream the barrel to get about .002" clearance. Chamfer the  muzzle end of the liner, peen the muzzle a small amount to make a metal to metal fit so the liner does not show. Sever drops of Loctite down the barrel and a light coat on the liner. Twist the liner while pushing it in to help spread the loctite. The liner will have to be driven in with a hammer when it gets to the muzzle. The Loctite gives plenty of time but the heat from sawing off the ends will usually get it started to set up. Then it goes in the lathe to clean up the muzzle and crown ( dialed in to the bore). Neck it gets the other end trued up and chambered. Been doing it this way for about 24 years.

And use a good grade of liner that has a uniform O.D., as John does.

I once bought three .22 liners from Numrich, and had the first one stick about halfway home, using the Loctite method.  The Loctite grabbed, and I had to bore it out.  If I'd been soldering, I could have pulled the liner back out, but the hassle of using that much heat has never appealed to me.

(Tossed the other two Numrich tubes - the O.D. was oversize by .005" in spots.  Lesson learned.  Finished the job with a liner from Brownells.)

The Loctite will let go when heated to 450 degrees supposedly. I found that it take a bit more. I alway make sure the liner will slide in before the Loctite is added.
Brownells sells Redman's liners, I use liners from T.J.'s.

According to Redman's website, he's no longer making liners.  So nowadays you might want to inquire of Brownells before buying one of theirs.
