Shaver Insert for a .38 cal. Remington # 2?

I think I recall that Lee Shaver will on special order make one of his .22 LR inserts to fit a .38 caliber barrel.  If so, would it be possible to use said insert in a .38 RF Remington # 2?

.38 rimfire nominally has a .375" groove diameter, while .357" is the modern .38 cal groove size.  So I would think the OD of the insert would need to be custom made. The question is best posed to Mr. Shaver.

Mr Lawrence, did you ever find out if this is possible?  I was searching to see if anyone had tried one of Mr Shaver's .38-55 inserts and this thread came up.

Thanks, I think an email to him should be on my list of things to do today.

Mr Lawrence, did you ever find out if this is possible?

Unfortunately, several very expensive emergencies finished out 2023, so it will be a while before I've the wherewithal to make an inquiry practical.  But I will do it. simply because I've neither the tools nor the patience to make my own .38RF cartridges.  And I will report back here once I know.

Thanks and sorry to hear that!  I hate it when real life gets in the way of a good time!

I don't see an email listed on the website so it looks like a call is in order sometime this week.  I need to price a .38-55 insert, a shorter than normal .45-70 insert (22" barrel) and I'll do my best to remember to ask him about the possibility of .38RF.

He made one for me a few years back. 9.3x47R near as we could tell. I sent him a chamber casting and he made it up. Worked fine.  9.3 is a few thou smaller than a 38.

For those who are interested, a very kind fellow member has contacted Mr. Shaver for me and, no, because of dimension-related restrictions, the .38RF is NOT a candidate for one of his adapters.

Bill, If you want to shoot it as the 38 rimfire, I can send you a few 38 special case made into 38 long rimfire. You or I would need to trim the brass if your #2 a 38 short.  I would send some 125 grain heeled bullets and 22 blanks also.  Steve has me using 3.5 to 3.8 grains of Unique.

A .22 rf insert for a #2 RB should be simplistic.  An 8mm OD liner, a few pieces of shink wrap electrical insulation shrunk on to space it to the barrel, a very thin chamber fitting sleeve locktited to the chamber end, and chamber and headspace for .22 lr.  If the 38 cal rf firing pin won't hit, would need to make a new breechblock in .22 rf.

I've fired many thousands of rounds of .22 rf through my .45-90 rolling block, just pry the cases out of the liner with a small screwdriver.  I switch in a .22 rf breech block to use it.
