Extraction problem

Took a new to me Ballard to the range yesterday..22lr rounds chamber just fine, but were very hard to extract after firing. Had to tap them out with a rod. Checked the cases for any bulges, but nothing I could see. Any ideas on how to fix.

Sounds as if there's an anomaly in your chamber - rust pit, reamer goof-up, something. I have the exact same issue with a Stevens 44 .22 that necessitates lining the chamber (or worst case lining the entire barrel).

Always a good idea to make a chamber cast of any new rifle that you get, this will take some of the guesswork out of it.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I use a bore scope to look at chambers for any roughness or issues. Lots of them on Ebay for under $15 listed as "endoscopes" in 5mm that will connect to your cell phone or laptop computer and work great.
Betting there's some roughness in the chamber that is holding the brass once it fire forms to the chamber.

Does this firing pin contact the edge of the chamber if dry fired?

Thanks for the responses. I'll do a chamber cast and the borescope.

Could also be ammo.  I shoot a lot of the bulk Eley the CMP sold a few years ago.  Shoots way above it's price point but it leaves a lot of lube residue and I have to brush the chamber with a nylon brush every 10-15 shots or extraction becomes difficult.  Small price for this much accuracy.
