There are, of course, many actions with short simple breech blocks; Farquharson and other of it's english relatives for example. They contain only the firing pin and their job is to place it in correct relationship to the primer, in order that it can be hit by a hammer which is independent of the breech block.

The breech block on a hauck is much more complex. It is not very tall, and along with the design of the main spring and hammer within the breech block, and the hammer contacting the sear that is outside of the breech block, the block tries to tip, destroying proper relationship to the contact with the cartridge case. If it were taller the chance of tipping would be less. The problem had to be addressed by allowing minimum clearance between the block and the receiver.  Hauck did this by adding a dove tailed part to the rear of the block, #9 on the diagram. By changing the thickness of the dove tailed part, the 'slack' in the system could be minimized. It was an attempt to fix a problem that perhaps should not have existed.

I have tried to make a taller block. This is the front. There is an added section at the bottom.

And this is the back. The dove tail part is replaced with a longer plate.
