At one point I was using a spitzer for BPCR. It was very accurate at 200 and 300 but at longer ranges, especially the rams, it got very squirrely when the wind came up. Switched to one of Dan Theodore's mini grooves and all was well after that.

That's what I've been using in my .40-65 for the last 6 or so years.  A 400gr BACO money with 3 reduced driving bands and mini grooves.  It hits the rams a lot harder than the Saeco #740 bullet I used to use.  The Saeco bullet is a little more accurate than the Money at 200&300 but has little energy left at the rams and barely topples them.   Although slightly less accurate than the Saeco at short range, it shoots quite well.   Last time out we set the all time silhouette single day and aggregate records for our range using that bullet.

I've used Rons spitzer out to 1000 yards with no problems. Have used it in my 40-50 on rams with no problems.

I should try another, heavier bullet but it would have to be tapered and the base would have to measure .407. The barrel has eight narrow lands so not sure it would work with a long bore riding bullet. Have cleaned the rams several times with the RLS over the years.  Perty sure the bore got dry and cruddy.

I just loaded a few cases. The fired cases are dimensionally the same as the new cases.
As requested a few pics of the rifle if you would like to see a few more just holler...

Grand slam,
Great looking wood on that rifle! I’m especially drawn to to the skeleton buttplate as I think they are cool!

Thanks Richard. Is that Turkish walnut on your rifle? Gorgeous!

I put my rifle together in a wood shed behind the house in Wellington Co back in 1984-5. All I had to go by was the Winchester book by Madis Ron Long loaned to me. At that time I knew very very little about single shot target rifles.
Had a chunk of wood from a tree I harvested in 1976. Ron made and installed the barrel for me.

The 40-65 using long bullets is a delight to use and so accurate.  Mild recoil, well, mild if one has been using a 45-90 for a few years.  Tongue

Thanks guys! Westerner, when I lived in Denver Ron and I were good friends and shooting buds....muzzle loaders. That was in the early‘70s and had just graduated gunsmith school there. I remember helping him struggle his Bridgeport into his basement shop...tough job even fo a couple of young guys. Yes it’s Turkish walnut. It’s a very dense stick of wood.
