Can I assume you have a CNC lathe?  Hopefully a bar machine?

3 Fadal vertical machining centers  w/ 4th axis and digitizing

several CADCAM programs including  Mastercam, Fusion360, Onecnc etc
some I can even use pretty well

plus

Bridgeports, lathe & surface grinder + wire and sinker EDM

BUT the only cost effective hourly rate is the VMCs and only
when making several of the same part
at least 20 or the programing and setup become cost prohibitive and that's at less than half "normal shop rate"

My legs are too old and hurt too much to do manual machining... even on guns. heck even my own guns.

Tang sights that don’t cost a full kidney would be nice.  Wink

Miller and Peregrine Extractors. Miller Extractor castings are available from Rodney but finished would be a big plus.

I know about that, all too well.  I have to sit on a stool to do anything at all.

Amen to that!

I had to give up machine and bench work full time after 30 years. Too many back problems. Got another gig with a little more exercise than basically standing still leaned over all day long. You don't think it would take a toll, but eventually it does.

Well, we're in good company.  Axel Petersen is quoted in a story written about him late in life: "I yust can hardly stand up anymore".

One of my small (literally) salvations is an Emco Maier Unimat 3, which is so small that I can set it on my desk and while away the time modifying brass.  Smiley

Every skilled trade has it's ailments that eventually catch up to guys who do the same thing day after day, for decades. I have bad shoulders, and bad feet, as do most of my coworkers who were electricians. Too many years standing on concrete, and too many years lifting equipment and tools overhead.

By digitizing -- you mean can reverse engineer a part by scanning it?

short answer:  yes
long answer:   it's never that easy

Renishaw touch probe with factory plus custom software allows me to create copies of imperfect original parts with an addition error of around .001 except at around 17 degrees of angle from the vertical where it's maybe .003 sometimes

to do it right "real reverse engineering" requires:
measuring cross sections and profiles
after first figuring out which ones Smiley
fixing the imperfections
creating a solid model

fast, accurate or cheap  ... pick any 1.5

I worked for Zeiss for 15 years.  Fast, accurate, but not cheap. I'm totally spoiled when it comes to reverse engineering.

I have 2 Helmel manual CMMs
Zeiss is a name that scares my wallet

What do you mean by spoiled when it comes to reverse engineering?

We could do a continuous scan of any surface, data density as close as single digits of microns.  This built up what we called a "point cloud", and our software could reduce this to a 3D CAD model.  We could even do this from a CAT scan, which led us to helping surgeons customize hip joints to fit the individual patient.  That was 13 years ago when I retired. Heaven knows what they're up to now.

going from a point cloud to a cad model either takes a lot of time or money for software and then learning how to use it

still the issue today

Zeiss has a great reputation  but I doubt playing with guns would generate enough cash flow to justify purchasing

10 years from now 5 year olds will be using photogrammetry on their cell phones to go from pics to solid model with free
software ... but not yet

Yup. I recall that the CAD end of this was CATIA, which then was $70k a seat.   I was sorta hoping that in ten years some of this had filtered into the machine  tool computers, but not yet, I take it.

I've created some 2D models by tracing a flat part on paper, then photographing the image and jumping from there to a .dxf file using some raster-to-vector freeware I have.  Accuracy only maybe .005" but good enough to get that guy in CA to laser-cut Model 44 link blanks.   I hasten to point out that I'm no sort of CAD jockey - I can't even run AutoCAD.  By the time I needed CAD for work I was in management and just hired whatever help I needed.
