Need some engraving Lettering/number, suggestions

I just finished polishing up a highwall action I'm restoring, and then had something I hadn't though through yet.

It has a lower tang that was repaired at one time.  I've finished it to original appearance, but it does not have a serial #.  It has not had one since I've had it, I didn't remove it, but it had been done by whomever welded it up and ground it back smooth.

I'd like for it to have a serial #.  To insure that it doesn't get marked with the # of another rifle out there somewhere, what I plan to do is number it the same as another 1885 I own, but add "A" after the #.  That other action will build an identical rifle to this one, as a set for my wife.  The other one is an early antique serial #, and this action is identical.

Who is out there that will engrave the numbers to match in style?  I don't want to have to resort to my bubba stamps.  I could salt etch a reasonable facsimile, but would prefer to send both tangs to someone, and have both recut to be identical workmanship.

I have gone through this process myself.  If you are numbering an early action the number should be done by a competent engraver who can copy Winchester style script.  Later stamped numbers need someone who can control the alignment of numbers.  There are gunsmith-machinists out there who can do that. but they need stamps close to Winchester size and style to look good.  Engraved script is actually easier to get done.

Dave, I think any good engraver could do this.  It would be a good question for linecutter on this board, Diane Scalese (bigskybob I think is her husband) and there are probably more here that I’m not aware of.

I used to use Guild engraver Bob Evans who is a friend and lives within 12 miles of my place. But Bob is 95 this Sunday, and quit engraving about 3 years ago, so now I'll need to find someone else.
Bob had a pantograph that he had different fonts for and could do block style stamped numbers, or hand engrave Winchester early style numbers.

are there any legal complications to just making up a SN# and engraving it on a firearm?
seems like there should be without a proper license.

Shouldn't be with an antique. Might be with a modern gun.

Since a High Wall could possibly be made after 1898, there is no guarantee it is an antique.  I doubt the ATF would even care about it though.  I have a couple with no serial numbers. One like Dave’s had it worn off and another that had it rusted off but someone stamped 1000 on one side of the lower tang that is not even visible when installed.

From what I understand, if a firearm does not have a serial number, you can put any number you wish on it.
Once the serial number is there, you cannot change it.

I knew somebody would bring up the antique vs. modern vintage on 1885's Jack. I'd assume if it's a flat spring it wont matter much. But I also bet ATF could care less either way.
Fortunately the 1885 I had was definitely antique, and the seller had repaired a crack in the pistol grip lower tang, and gave me the serial number, so no guessing what number it was.
I've had old guns with repairs that obliterated the serial number. But they were other brands where the makers stamped the numbers in numerous places, so easy to find them.
I've also got several old Ballard Schuetzen rifles that have custom maker's barrels on them and have a Stevens style setscrew, and it's right through the serial number. One a Pope, and one a Schoyen. People get all excited when they notice the serial numbers are defaced, and think it's some law being broken. Bet there was no such law back when the work was done.

It is interesting that Winchester did not serialize the lower tang to the receiver.  I have some rifles that I would bet that the flat spring receiver is older than the non-antique lower tang.  My main target rifle fits that category with a 1919 serial number on the pistol grip lower tang.  The trigger parts were for a single set, but the hammer and sear were not.  I bet someone added the complete lower tang at some time well after the receiver was manufactured.
As long as the rifle that Dave has does not sport one of them Unertl or Lyman sniper scopes, he is probably OK.

I knew guys long ago who would buy up Winchester parts for single shots and leverguns, and run the numbers on any tangs to see what the records showed. Then if it was a unique special order they'd assemble a gun with the tang to match what the records showed.
I never understood why Winchester only marked a removable lower tang either?
