Love the before and after pics. Really pleased with the way your trapdoor turned out. Frank

Marlinguy,

Nice job & very nice looking rifle.

I have a couple of TD, an 1877 carbine in very nice condition and an 1884 rifle.  The 1884 is one of the rare rifles that was never issued by Springfield.  It was one of several new TD’s found in a factory crate marked “Springfield”.  It was still covered in cosmoline grease.  After researching the subject and exchanging info on the rifle with Al Fraska (the leading expert on TD's) I understand that Springfield built more than demand at the time and had a surplus when the next model (M88) was introduced with the sliding rod-bayonet.  So some crated rifles remained in storage and were never issued.  The rifle is in pristine mint condition with no dings or scratches to be found.  I'm considering selling it since I have the carbine to shoot.  When I get a chance I'll take some nice photos & post them here.

Wayne

Thanks fellas.
I actually never had an interest in the vast majority of military rifles, as my interest has always been Sporting models of the 1800's single shots. But the combination of the gorgeous bore, and perfect action, plus cheap price made this a no brainer to buy.
I'm still puzzled by how "soft" the wood is compared to any other old single shot Sporter I've fitted stocks on? These are the softest walnut I've ever worked with, and very easy to shape. Of course the fact it was so close to final size made it even easier to work with.
