.40-60 Maynard or .40 Krag? (Read 858 times)

	Actually, it would be 303/40, as I’m thinking to use .303 British brass. Am I right in thinking that either .303 or .30-40 brass will be a bit shorter than “true” (whatever that is) .40-60 Maynard brass? And if so, do ‘smiths cut a chamber to accommodate the shorter brass? Is there any advantage or disadvantage to using .303 brass over .30-40 brass? Again, would the chamber be cut differently if one brass is favored over the other? I’m in completely muddy water here, about all I know is that the .40-60 Maynard seems to be quite accurate and easier to make good loads for than other similar cases such as .40-65 WCF. Or am I wrong in this assumption?

	The Krag brass makes good 40/60 Maynard brass. The 303 Brit brass will be a little short upon fire forming. The 303 has thicker brass in the neck and will make a case with a smaller internal neck diameter than Krag brass.

	I just formed some brass for the .38-50 Hepburn. I like using the .40-70 Sharps for the first blowing out the .30 cal bottle necks in a longer chamber that will give me a smooth case that I wont get in a shorter chamber when it formed around the shell stop at the chamber end and then run through a .38 sizing die. A full blown .303 Brit case will be 2.214" long fired in the .40-70 chamber. The base diameter is ,455" case wall thickness of the PPU .303 case is .009" +- The .30-40 BBC brass, (CapTech Brass) .2.335 long The base diameter .454" Cases neck thickness .010"-.013" The Winchester 30-40 Krag brass The neck thickness runs .009"-.010" Kurt

	If you go with the 40-60 Maynard use the 30-40 Krag brass in preference to the .303 British which requires more work to make chamber as it requires neck turning owing to the thicker necks. Unfortunately here in OZ 30-40 krag brass is not sold here , at least where I live anyway, so I got my 40-60 cases direct from BACO already formed. Later after many re loadings I tried locally sourced .303 cases which are easy to get here and cheap, that's when I struck problems with the thicker brass. Mike.

	Ahhh Mike, Just put paper diapers on those bullets and the thicker neck walls would be perfect

	I tried paper patching with a couple of different PP moulds I had but could not get better accuracy than with greasers which were less trouble to produce. This was all done with BP and fixed ammunition, none of that modern powder, strictly traditional. Mike.
