	Did you read the description? 'Condition: Overall very good. Light wear. The bore is in very good condition, with light wear and strong rifling. Mechanically fair, missing safety and does not fire. Case is in fair condition, right side of case and lid loose and hinges are broken. Light wear to accessories ' Seems a shame to let something so well made deteriorate in such a short amount of time (40 years). We have guns centuries old in as good if not better condition. My civil war rifles at least fire! It would be one thing if it was a military rifle but this was built as a show piece and someone didn't care

	Just to provide a little encouragement… it’s a Ruger #1! every mechanical part is readily available. I’m most concerned about the description of the bore condition, but even that may be under rated by the seller. It looks like someone is going to get a diamond in the rough at a very good price. An easy application of just a little TLC and that rifle should be ready to go on winning matches in style! Froggie

	I guess I don't see anything all that bad about this gun, nor do I feel it's "deteriorated" either. Can't imagine how a gun this new has "light wear" in the bore, especially considering how it likely was used, and what bullets and powder would be fired in it? I think if it stays down even 2x-3x the price it is today it's a real steal for whoever gets it! What a piece of history, and a gorgeous gun!

	I shot in the Coors Schuetzenfest in '83 when Grant Gruver won that rifle. I had never shot in a match before and so Grant coached me, Grant was a good guy, as well as very good offhand shot. Paul Shuttleworth brought Grant a Highwall Winchester with double set triggers out of a Aydt. The rifle was in the rough but shot very well indeed. My rifle had Paul Shuttleworth stocks too, although mine were finished. I doubt Grant shot his 1st prize rifle very much.

	Talked to Grant several years ago he lived in Salina Ks at the time. I only live 40 miles from Salina, we talked about getting together to shoot, but never did. I seem to remember he told me he shot an 8.15x46r at the Coors in ‘83. I had (still have) a thick side DST hiwall 32-40 built by Paul Shuttleworth. Mike

	I can't help but wonder if the person selling this rifle today is familiar enough with the rifling Ron Long's barrel has to even determine the condition. He might easily be looking at perfect shallow rifling and thinking it's showing some wear due to it not being deeper like many factory barrels are. I've had friends look down the bores of my Schoyen and Pope rifles and comment about the bores being "shiny, but pretty worn" simply because the depth wasn't what they usually see.

	My thought about the original description is that something suspicious was going on. Maybe the seller or auction house was deliberately describing the rifle's condition in part as a CYA because of the never-installed safety? Or maybe because there was a "behind the scenes" agreement to sell it at a pre-arranged price, to the original consigner's detriment? Has that ever happened in the gun business? Perhaps one where the estate executor was less than competent? Did it sell in October 2021 for $6,000? And then in November 2022 for $3,800? Can anyone dig deeper? There's a good Journal article here.
