Unburned powder in the bore, 300 rook
Feb 5th, 2023 at 8:04pm
Print Post
Been working on getting a rook rifle chambered in 300 rook shooting. I have started with  7 1/2 grains of 4227 using BACO bullet.  I’m see what appears to be unburned powder in the bore.  I push a cleaning patch through it and it sure looks like power that comes out on a paper towel.  Any help on what is going on?

4227 in that small case will always leave powder residue in the bore. I'd switch to a faster powder like Unique, Red Dot, or Bullseye. Load data for .32 S&W Long works well when I had my Martini Rook rifle in the .300 Rook.

Thanks Vall, I was wondering if that wasn’t the issue.  It’s a load that I had seen as a recommended start so I tried it.  I’ll take a look at some loads using those other powders.

I found with my cadet and adi 2205(same powder) that a lite crimp helped with combustion. I used a 32-20 crimp die and a small piece of aluminium to get the right height

I also modified a 32-20 FCD for my cadet.
I found as you did it helped with the slower pistol powders.
good to hear I wasn't the only one with the results.

I use Universal Clays in my 310, no unburnt powder.  Unburnt powder in you barrel is not the end of the world.

I didn’t modify mine as I also have a 32-20 that I use it with Smiley

Out of necessity here in Australia, and like Gumpy, find unburnt powder in my barrel. Given my rifle shoots well, I don't care about the unburnt powder.

is it the appropriate burning rate? Probably not but without the 4227/ AR2205 I could not shoot it ar all  Smiley

What loads do you use for Unique and Bullseye?

The two loads I tried with 80 gr BACO bullets are as follows

For Unique, I have tried 4.5 gr
For Bullseye, I used 2.4 gr.

It really depends on the rifle/action for my loads. In an older weaker action I use 4.3 grs. of Unique with a 100 gr. bullet, but in a strong action I've gone as much as 5.5 grs. with the same 100 gr. bullet. That's a 1500 fps load in the higher charge.
With Bullseye I'm only loading lighter loads at around 2.5 grs.

That happens to me with several stick powders. I just don't look at it anymore and it doesn't bother me a bit now.

I’ve come to the same conclusion Mike.  Tried some other loads but it shoots to good with the 4227 so sticking with it.
