I found a 45 for sale and would like to get info as to what this model was like.Is it a true 44 1/2 the frame measures 1.250 in width the block is .675 in width. It wears a original full octagon barrel in 38/55 that has a liner in it to 22 rf.

With those dimensions the rifle sounds like it has a 44 frame rather than a 44 1/2. When you open the action does the breech block come out of the bottom? A model 44 does not as the breech block pivots. With the frame being 1.25” wide, it sounds like it has the larger frame usually used on early higher grade rifles that used the 44 frame.

45 is a model number that has certain features that were available both on 44 and 44 1/2 actions. Consult this chart:

Interestingly, neither my 44 (model 45) or my 44 1/2 actions are that wide and your breech block is wider than my 44's but not as wide as my 44 1/2. The world of Stevens can be an interesting one.

I was just going to say the same thing.  The biggest tell for a quick "off hand" look are the screws.  The pattern of screws in the side wall are distictly different between the 44 and 44 1/2.  Even if you only have a crummy picture of the gun you are interested in, the pattern and number of screws in the sidewalls of the two actions are disctinct and easy to recognize.  Now what's hard to tell from crummy (and even good) pictures is the difference between the 44 1/2 and the smaller 044 1/2.  And thats what led me to my first Stevens.  Thinking that the latter was the former in a Gun Broker purchase.  At first I was disappointed but now I have two 044 1/2s and I'm pretty happy with that.  Best of luck!

S99, for the record, what are the widths of your 044 1/2 frames and blocks, if you don't mind.

044 1/2 frames are approximately 1” wide and the breech blocks are .750”.

I would guess that the 45 in question was ordered with double set triggers so that’s why it has the thicker frame.

FWIW the DST option in the 44 style actions does not require the heavy Schuetzen frame.  The DST tang assembly fits perfectly well in the standard frame, (I've got two examples).  The early DST tang assembly also fits the 44-1/2 without modification.

If the O.P.'s rifle has the heavy frame, it's for some other reason.

Serial number would also be a clue, over 13,000, impossible to be a 44 1/2.

44 frame is 1.250”, 44 1/2 is thinner, 1.125” with a .875” block.

There are mentions of heavy frame 44. It was a Schuetzen Model, I think #51, for the heavier calibers. I don’t know what the width was.

I don’t think there’s was a heavy 44 1/2.

All the 44s in my collection have ~1.125" frame width.  That includes a 44 DST action, s/n 6815. Face stamped 44 / 0  so it's definitely a 44.  Don't have any of the heavy Schuetzen frames to measure.

Good to know, thank you.

A picture of the rifle in question would be helpful.
