Ballards may be weaker,

Powder Valley shows it in stock for $44.50 lb. or $316.50 for 8 lb. jug. $19 S&H, $19 hazmat fee for either, so better buy the 8 lb. jug!

Alliant Power Pro 300 MP might be a better choice. I have used it in everything from my 25-35, 28-35, 32-40 and 38-55 while breech seating only and only in serious 200 yard benchrest competition.
MP stands for Magnum Pistol powder and it is also a Ball powder that does measure very accurately.
Myself I am already on my 8th. 8lb Jug and the consistency from lot to lot has also been very consistent.
It also does tend to prefer magnum primers or at least does for.
As well as the Federal 210's, CCI 200's and of course both their match grade primers as well but for me they did not actually make a noticable and extremely competitive difference for me either.
If you are going to use it for fixed I have never used it for that over the past 23+ plus years of my own competitive shooting.

I've seen it at all of the small gun shops here in south central PA. Prices are up tp $50 per pound and the 8 pound jugs are over $300.
Haven't seen much of anything at the larger chain stores like Sportsman Supply or Basspro.
I know that doesn't help you if you not here but my experience says to keep checking your local small shops. Good luck.

Too bad you are not close to Minneapolis. I have about 8 lbs to get rid of cause I too have converted to 300MP (aka SMP301).

4227 is on the shelf two gun shops in Virginia 1lb jugs and one had a couple 8 pounders.  Did not look carefully at the price I have 3 lbs on hand. Mid 40 dollars I think.

Late to the party here, RJ-35-40, but your general location might be useful for the gang here to help.  If you can walk in and buy it, you can pay a buck or three more per pound and still come out winners by not paying shipping and HazMat.
As for why use it, I’ll admit that although I’m on record as preferring IMR 4759 when I breech seat 45-70, but the best fixed rounds I ever found for 32-40 used the recommended charges of IMR 4227.

I think most any gun store will have it.   Out here in the boonies our little gun shop has it.   It is a buck or two more than Midway, but that beats paying shipping and hazmat fees by a lot of bucks.  I think it was $48/pound here in Salmon.
