The well-known .35-35 Remington Maynard ...
Dec 31st, 2022 at 10:17am
Print Post
One of the boys over on Paco's Leverguns forum mentioned that Remington has announced a new levergun cartridge for states requiring a straight-walled cartridge with case no longer than .180. It is based on the .30 WCF case blown out and trimmed and it has been named the .360 Buckhammer, with ballistics quoted as a 200-grain bullet at 2190 -- basically a straight-walled .35 Remington.
I wisecracked that it was a slighly shortened version of the .351 Winchester Self-loading, with a rim.
But then I got to thinking about it, and after consulting Cartridges of the World, I realized that it would fit almost exactly halfway between the .35-30 Maynard and the .35-40 Maynard. My sick gun-crank nature has me envisioning this thing loaded with duplexed black under a paper-patched lead bullet out of some sort of single-shot marked .35-35 Remington Maynard at the rear end of the barrel.  Cheesy

So is this a rebated rim like the .35 Rem. or a rimmed cartridge like the .35-30 based on blown out .30-30 cases shortened?

Essentially you are describing a 35/30-30, with the neck shortened/trimmed by .20 to meet the state cartridge length requirement.  I chambered two rifles in this caliber using a .357 liner (Handi Rifle and Martini Cadet) and both shoot very well.  This article describes the cartridge:

I have a rifle here that was not reamed correctly and supposed to be a .35-40 Maynard. But chamber cast shows the neck is far too small for the .357" barrel groove. So I'm planning on reaming it for the .35-30(.30-30) also to make it usable.
Just need to decide where to rent the reamer from.

This is a straight-walled case. The .35-30  Model 94 I owned was a necked-up, but not blown out, .30-30.
Craig Boddington introduces the cartridge in the February Guns and Ammo, which I quit subscribing to many years ago.

A tempest in a tea pot, IMO. The solution for the need for a medium capacity rimmed straight walled .35 deer hunting cartridge has been with us all along - the .357 Maximum. (.35-30 Maynard for all intents and purposes but with a stronger brass case.) Out of my 26" Martini barrel I easily reached 1900 fps with a cast 200 grain bullet, squarely in .35 Remington realm, with a healthy but not max charge of 1680. I could go faster but choose not to.

As with the .350 Legend, yet another re-invention of the wheel. But, progress has to march on I suppose, as does corporate profits and wonderment of ill-informed new shooters.

I am not arguing for or against this new cartridge -- just pointing out that Remington might have unknowingly introduced the first new Schuetzen chambering in well over a century. I'll be looking forward to seeing the SAAMI chamber specs.  Cool

Kind of a cool looking cartridge for what we do.
I have a rifle in 350 legend and it's been a wonderful  lead bullet cartridge.

That looks more like the .35-30 Wildcat than the Maynard. Looking at CotW the picture of the .35-30 Maynard shows a straight wall case as your picture on the right. The case to your left looks like the .35-30(.30-30) in this picture.
Mine currently is a straight tapered case like the .32-40 or .38-55, but whoever reamed it left it short, and not full diameter at the neck. Fireformed cases measure .344" i.d. at the case neck, so much too small for the .357" groove barrel.
We're going to rechamber to the .35-30 Wildcat and make it right. 4D carries the reamer and the gauge to check headspace.

Vall-If the 35-40 you are referring to is the Darr 35-40, my Darr 35-40 has a similar chamber that I believe was designed as a breach seat only chamber. I bought a Weber breach seater and changed the case to match the chamber, and the narrow neck guides the bullet into alignment. The rifle shoots very well breach seated BTW.

Val,the right case was just a 32-40 I fired in the 9.1x51R chamber. It's not fully formed but appears to be a straight taper to .35 caliber.
Case on left was a 30-30 for comparison

Thanks CBA. This print bears very little resemblance to the classic .35-30, "America's first wildcat," with an obvious shoulder.

My mistake! It appears the 9.1x51R is much like the .35-40 that Barry Darr and others chambered for from .32-40 brass, or formed down .38-55 brass.
How old a cartridge is the 9.1x51R? I don't see this cartridge in any of my references?
