Looking for info on a Pope barrel
Dec 29th, 2022 at 3:48pm
Print Post
I'm looking for information about a certain marking on a Pope barrel.
Under the forend is numbers I believe are the info he stamped on his barrels.
21
---‐----
141
Is stamped on the barrel, my understanding is that was how HP coded his rifling twist.
Has anyone have a book or info on exactually this is deciphered?
Thnx

21 and 1.41 are typical parameters for .32 & .33 caliber barrels. They represent key cam setting parameters for the gain twist. The base twist is ~15.5" but the cam will induce a lower rate at the breech and a slightly higher rate at the muzzle. The degree of gain is driven by those two cam settings.  We will wait and see if anyone gives the details on what each number specifies (I am not at liberty to tell unless it has been made public elsewhere).

Thnx Dave, I know many years ago I read about it in an article. But a lot of water has flown under the old bridge
Since I saw it.
And I never thought I'd need that information being here in Canada.
Not a lot of Pope's work found its way north.

This is an area I was very disappointed by when I bought the two volume set on the Hartford Pope barreled rifles. I really expected the authors to cover the various codes, and yet they failed to mention anything more than the fact these numbers indicated settings for Pope's rifling machine.
If this is common knowledge, then it puzzles me even more that it wasn't covered and explained thoroughly in the Pope books.

Who is being protected by keeping this a secret? Did Harry Pope promise to come back and haunt anyone who told what the numbers mean?
I just don't understand the reason for not revealing this info? And who is that special person who gives the OK to tell what it means?

Who knows what mystery lies in the dark secret of Pope's settings?

I bet the secret is stored in the Vatican archives.  Other popes have hidden secrets there!

The person who is in possession of Mr. Pope's  equipment had put in considerable effort working out the details and requested years ago to not disclose the results. However we had planned to publish in the journal at one point but it never worked out. I did publish a short article in the journal (Vol. 46, Issue No. 2) explaining how certain published papers were incorrect. On his go ahead I would gladly write up a full analysis.

I agree there is no magic in the exact twist rate profile. It was care in work and final twist rate that rules in the end.

I look forward to the write-up.

PM sent, bohemianway, but I wonder whether our Journal editor might be persuaded to reprint it.  I’m sure others would also be pleased to see it.  How about it, Joe?  Possibility?
