merry Christmas to me :-)

The mailman brought me a couple of highwalls.

The top one is a late model coil spring rifle, rebarreled very nicely with a 28" #3 part octagon in 30 WCF, plain trigger and Lyman sights.  It's done very well.  The only thing that's doesn't quite look right is the breech block has been relieved at the top, something like on p76 of Campbell's first book.

The second one I took a pretty big risk on.  It was on consignment in Quebec with low resolution pictures and only one guy on staff who spoke any English.  I called and asked him a little about the general condition of the rifle and was able to determine it was a #4 barrel at least.   It showed up with a single set trigger to my surprise.  I was hoping the front sling attachment was factory as it's a relatively rare option I think, but I do not believe it is.  Anyway it's a .32-40 with a 30" #4 part octagon, single set trigger, sling swivels. It came with a Lyman Targetspot Jr. that looks almost like new, complete with lens covers.  I don't think it's been used in a very long time as the turrets are gummed up and maybe seized.  I'll have to have a good look at the bore.  Maybe a little dark in front of the chamber but I haven't cleaned it yet.  It also came with this really nice felt lined carrying case.

It's a pretty good Christmas so far!!

Chris.

I am jealous Chris.  I got my 40-63 Ballard and 10x Targetspot (not Super or Junior) a week ago.  The scope looked rusty in the auction photos, but it was just very dirty.  I had some sear spring issues to deal with that I think are all worked out.  The barrel is not in good shape, but there is plenty of visible rifling.

I didn't know there was a Targetspot without the Jr or Super!

I am not sure what the power is on this one as it's not marked on the ring like my 10x one is.  I'm going to put a little bit of oil on the turrets and see if they free up.  The cross hairs and lenses seem very good.

I suspect that this .32-40 was a hunting rifle maybe, as it doesn't seem to have seen much use.  The finish on the wood, other than some marks, is probably 90%.  The metal is very good too other than some old pitting on the sides of the lever.

The 30 WCF I bought mainly because it was beautiful and the price was low enough that it was impossible to resist.  A few of the guys I shoot silhouette with also shoot a muzzle loader trail walk ( 50-60 tricky steel targets on a long trail ) but with smokeless and low vel cast loads.  25 yards to 200, all off hand.  If I can find a nice plain base cast bullet load this might be the perfect rifle for it.

A new shoulder would be nice!  I wouldn't mind a replacement spine and a couple of knees Smiley.

Thanks for that info Jack.  I learn a lot here.  I also found that my new scope is an 8x.  The marking is on the body of the scope instead of the knurled ring.

I've been doing some cleaning of the bore on that .32-40.  There might not be any pitting at all, but there is an enormous amount of lead in the bore.  It looks like someone probably shot some undersized hard cast lead bullets in it before putting it back into the closet Smiley.

So you going to trade 1885s for RKS barrels?
You seem to be accumulating a surplus.
Merry Christmas.
Has your wife caught you hugging those 1885s?

Actually Dave I happen to have a new gain twist .32 cal RKS barrel here.   I actually bought it from Gail at CPA because she could profile it for me.  I'm not sure whether I should put it onto my Meacham action or maybe I should use the original action on that highwall in .219 DW.

My wife saw those highwalls last night.  We happened to pull into the driveway right as the mail man was unloading them Smiley

Sneak 'em in through the garage when she's watching her soaps. Put the packing debris in your trunk. Last, make up a story about selling something and making a profit to explain the grin on your face. This is serious business here!

You were able to get them delivered directly to your door in Canada?

Yeah, some of our rules up here are looser than what you guys have believe it or not.  Until recently you could mail order hand guns and have them delivered by mail.  More than once people have had the postman leave a pistol on the porch when no one was home Smiley.  I think some of the rules up here for short barreled rifles are looser too.

That is all changing though.  The liberals are working super hard to make all guns illegal up here.  Believe it or not they are now trying to ban the super dangerous Ruger #1.  Basically they've decided that any gun that can produce over 10,000 KJ of energy ( just under 7500 ft lbs ), is too dangerous for people to have.  Apparently someone had rebarreled a Ruger #1 to 460 Weatherby which makes any Ruger #1 too dangerous regardless of chambering.

At a local shop there is a nice little schuetzen configured .40-65 Ruger #1 with an RKS barrel, Canjar trigger, and Lyman Super Targetspot that needs rescuing if the legislation passes.  I'd hate to see one of Ron's barrels get handed over for destruction.

Once the government outlaws guns, the time has come to outlaw those dictatorial autocrats in government.
Perhaps you could ship them all to The Island of Elba where the current temp is in the mid 50'sF

History has repeated itself too many times for people to ignore the next consequence of registration & confiscation.

Just yesterday a woman in England was arrested and imprisoned for praying silently outside on the sidewalk in front of a abortion clinic. No signs etc.

Orwell predicted this, it's happening all over the world.
