I made a promise...

Good family friend passed away about a year ago leaving a lifetime collection of "stuff". He owned a couple of gun shops over the years and had accumulated quite a bit of stuff. Had a lot of guns and ammunition, parts etc...He had no children to take care of it so his widow ask me to help her with it. Have sold a lot of it through auction and private sales but I loaded up a load and worked the local gun show this weekend. Did pretty good I guess. Lot of the dealers knew him that were there. I had ten guns left on the table and one guy said he would take them all. Came over at the end of the show today and made me a penny on the dollar offer. Why do people want something for nothing? These were nice doubles an old scheutzen rifle and some Smith handguns. I know he has to re sell them for a profit but don't insult my friends memory with such crap as that. He wouldn't have done it. Very little honor or respect left in the world today. Rant over. Moral of my story is keep your promises and don't take no crap...

Alas, Society imposes insults that must be borne.  I had a table holder at a show who was really interested in a rifle I was carrying around assure me he was interested in buying at my price, but he had to take care of some business.  If I could wait a minute, he would be back.

After many minutes, he came back and made an offer of about 1/3 of what I wanted.  I said no and walked away to my belated lunch.

As far as I was concerned, it was insulting, alright, but being insulting is part of the man’s job.  After all, I might have said yes, and he wasn’t going to let a chance go by.  I would imagine making a living trading guns would not be a job for the timid.

Way back when, there was a state Arms collector’s association that was worth joining because you got into their gun shows for free.  The incoming President of the club wrote an article in their newsletter that he hoped his tenure would mark a new era where the Association would evolve beyond, as he described it, “Just a bunch of gun hustlers.”

I left the state a few years later, and as far as I could see, the Association was still just a bunch of gun hustlers.

I didn’t mind. Learned some negotiation skills from them, how puffery is countered, and other trading techniques, although, of course I would never make the grade as a professional.  But I’d still snap up the occasional bargain, even from them.

It’s really a matter of how quick you want the sale.  Stuff gets snapped up quick at low prices, or hangs on maybe for years until the right buyer shows up.  Or, more often, the price wears itself down to a level both parties can agree on.

I've done this for several friend's wives after they passed, and it's never an easy task because if you're a good friend you want to try to get everything you can for the widow.
It usually begins with the best things selling quickly, and at good prices, and as you get down to small items, or lesser value guns the difficulty begins. We often end up getting lower prices than we felt are appropriate, or end up hauling these things to more and more venues to try to maximize what they get.
I usually reach a point where I negotiate a deal with someone whose a dealer, or wants to try to make money themselves, and move whatever is leftover to finish the task.
All we can do, is the best we can try to do. It's still better than what the wife or family would likely do if we try hard enough.

I'm in the process of doing that for the widow of a good friend of many years. I've done well so far but still have a few hard to move items and quite a few small parts that will go on ebay.

I was the beneficiary of a local shooters liquidation for a friend’s widow due to my good deed. I was the last shooter at my local unmanned range and noticed a pistol rug sitting on the bottom of a rifle rack. I took it home and contacted the club secretary who took my contact information and said he would let everyone know at the upcoming board meeting.  I didn’t make it back to the range for a couple of weeks and later found out the guy who left it figured I might have found it and had posted a sign next to ‘MY’ bench. ( I would show up 1/2 hour before the range opened most of the time and take the far left bench.  Far away from the brass slinging black guns). Anyway, the club secretary had forgotten about it and it was about 3 weeks before I was able to contact the owner and give him his prized 1911 back.
Fast forward about a month. The 1911 guy came up to me and asked if I wanted a box of mostly tang sights he had been unable to sell for the widow.  He was giving them away and knew I shot single shots.  I was surprised and pleased. When I was able to check them out there was over $400 of sights in that box!

What surprised me is that several of the sights would have been easy to sell on eBay.  A couple were not complete but I ended up selling those as parts. I feel as if I should better document the value of my equipment and how best to dispose of it.  I am sure no one if my family knows what a Belding  and Mull measure is worth.

I've never been concerned about my old guns after I'm gone, but I have often thought about all the other related equipment, and what happens to it.
I've got an old briefcase full of front, rear, and tang sights and the sights in it are likely worth more than some of my old rifles. Just not sure how to ensure they get sold properly, unless I individually packed each sight with a description, and price on it?

If you put prices expected on your stuff, be reasonable.  After all, things are only worth what people are willing to pay; and you don't want to give your heirs grief by expecting them to hold out for amounts that may take a long time, if ever, to be accepted.

Guy I barely knew heard I was going to sell a nice Parker shotgun through a consignment dealer. Asked if I would bring it to a shoot and give him first look. Packed it up carried it along with my usual shooting gear. 3 day’s he kept saying he would get with me to look.

End of the shoot after passing half a dozen times where he put me off with excuses guy never looked at the gun. Took it home & mailed to the dealer who sold it at more than I was thinking about.

There is little honor among gun traders. My advice find a good consignment dealer and be glad to pay his commission. Working on a percentage he’s motivated to obtain best price & deals with the jerks for you.

I do have a few bad consignment  dealer stories.

Marlinguy,

you might have not, but perhaps if you left less than a 7-figure estate your widow might.

I have no idea what this means? Do you mean if my estate was more than 7 figures my widow wouldn't think of it, but less she would? Seems backwards to me.

like Val im.sure my guns will be somewhat easy to value when I'm gone. The oddball sights ,molds ,and reloading stuff will sell for pennies on the dollar unless I tag and price each item now.

as far as ISS's comments....only a drunkard in Nampa can translate thst jibberish.
