I had some fun at the range today with my .56-50 rimfire Split breech carbine and fake .50-45 m1867 navy carbine.

Spoiler alert - they are both fun to shoot! Here is the video:

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for all the work you have done on showing how to get these old rifles shooting again.  Taking the time to make the videos and sharing with us.  Thanks to you I got my Remington #2 in 32 x-long
rimfire shooting.  You are a man of my own heart. Thank you again!  Keep up the good work.

Thank you all for your kind words. I do enjoy the challenge of making the cartridges and hearing the old boys roar again. To me, just looking at them in the rack brings little pleasure. They deserve to be carefully exercised now and then.

Enjoyed your u-tube of the two carbines.   I had one of th "fake" navy carbines years ago, but it had been chambered for the 50-70.  Never shot it much though.   There is always something very special about putting these old original carbines to use.  I have a half dozen or so original carbines and shoot them all.  My favorites are an outside primed Maynard Second Model and a Peabody in 56-50 converted to centerfire.   As you said, "They are fun to shoot."   I hartely agree.

Many years ago I had an original .50-70 Sharps carbine conversion. Shooting full house .50-70s was a brutal.  The .50-45 and .56-50 are much more user friendly  Smiley

That is for sure and certain!  I have 3 original carbines in 50-70; a Peabody, a Sharps, and a NY Rolling Block.  Much more fun to shoot the Maynard, 56-50 Peabody, and the Spencer carbines.   One of these years I hope to work up a "carbine" load for the 50-70.  Maybe about 45-50 grains of powder and a 350 grain bullet.  Just never seem to get around to it.

I se there is a Remington split breech on GunBroker too.  I'm tempted, but I think reason will prevail!

They are pretty scarce, that one is a little high. But in the right ballpark. I'd like to find a type 1 to go with my type 2. But I don't ask for much   Grin

IIRC, there was originally a lighter load for the carbines; 50 grains of BP.  Don't remember if the bullet was lighter.

That was 35+ years ago - pre-internet days. In my ignorant bliss, I didn't know there was a carbine load. I only learned of it years later, after selling the carbine  Shocked

This post is directed more or less to Steve, ndnchf, but any other comments will certainly be helpful.

I am in the process of making some cases for the 45-45 Peabody rimfire.   When I originally bought this carbine I intended to convert it to center fire.   But, in corresponding with Edward Hull,  this appears to be almost a one of a kind carbine, so I am going trying to make some rim fire cases for it.  I've watched the u-tubes on making rim fire brass and it looks pretty straight forward.  The Peabody cartridge is pretty much a straight taper until the mouth.  The base is very close to the 50-70.   Anyway,    I've necked down 4 cases so they will chamber and plugged the primer pocket as you show.

After I get them set up for the 22 blanks, they will have to be fire formed to the chamber.   I will probably do this with black powder and a soft lead bullet.

My question is just how much of a boost is the powder in the blank?   I have used duplex loads in other rifles and suspect that I should make a significant reduction in the black powder charge because of the smokless in the blanks.  Any thoughts on this would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
