Anyone heard of John Shull? (Read 742 times)

	I recently got this loading tool done similar to the Schoyen design, and papers with it were a note signed by the maker, John Shull of California. Anyone recognize the name, or know if he's still around, or when he made tools? (You need to *Login* or *Register* to view media files and links)

	Marlinguy, I have the same tool it came from an ASSRA auction thirty years ago. .45 cal. marked on flat 45 and a tiny mark that is a wolf head. Rudi Prusok listed it as being made and donated by Werner Wolf. Is yours marked? Could Mr. Shull be the previous owner? I will add a picture later today to the post. Not sure where Mr. Shull shot here in California but never hears the name in last sixty years. Ray please post a picture of you tool perhaps it was donated by Werner Wolf but NOT made by him as I understood? Ok, Took a magnifying glass its not a Wolf but SCHULL in very tiny script.

	I knew John quite well. Unfortunately he passed away about 15 years ago. I have one of his loading tools that he made for my .45 - 2 7/8 Borchardt. Quality work. John owned a metal heat treatment shop and he was a talented self-taught machinist and "rifle crank."John was a submariner in WWII and graduated from UC Berkeley via the GI BIll. He knew a great deal about a great many things and was a pleasure to talk to. He had a way of explaining things that when done, you understood what he said. He was active in the CA single shot rifle matches. I deeply miss him.

	Ray, I was reading this thread and thinking that name John Shull sure sounds familiar. Then I see your post and oh duh! How time flies and what a bad memory I’m getting!!

I have a Werner Wolf tool, and his was a copy of Schoyen also, but looks different. It's blued and the head is not quite the same. An interesting attachment on the back of the Shull tool is an aluminum plate bent 90 degrees to keep your hand from sliding up towards the head as you use it! As you might see my tool has two decapping rods for .45-70, and .40-65, and the note from John Shull states this in the description. Also thanking the buyer for his purchase, and his signature at the bottom, with a phone number. Something unique on this Shull tool is the primer pocket brush at the bottom of the shaft. It is a group of fine strand wires crimped together to form the brush. Obviously it's for large rifle primers only.

	Yes, I have a pair of those and they work well with no chance on enlarging the primer pocket as a scraper might.
