Adult-sized stock on Stevens Favorite
Aug 14th, 2022 at 9:38pm
Print Post
I have a couple of Stevens favorite rifles, models 1894 and 1915.
I would like to put a larger butt stock on them, since I'm fairly tall and find the original stocks way too short.
I understand that I would need to increase the height of the comb, as well as the length, in order to not have too much drop at the heel.
Has anyone here done this? If so, about how much did you need to add to the stock dimensions?
Thanks,
Rick

I did this by laying the rifle on a big sheet of paper and tracing the original stock, then added the additional length I needed, then adjusted the comb height to where it made sense.  Once I had a paper pattern, I cut on a piece of wood.  I inletted the wood to the frame first, then refined the stock shape to the template.  It’s scary at first, but not too hard.

Thanks for the reply.Do you remember how much you had to add, and did you have to bend the receiver tangs also?

I just had CPA make a stock for my 1915 with a longer length of pull, of course the added cheek piece and fancy wood cost quite a bit extra.

2 x 6. I'm a firm believer in making a "Try Stock" out of Common Lumber.  The Inletting can be gouged out, just so it's secure.  Cut too much off, glue on a piece and try again.  I'm talking Quick and Rough.  No need to sand it beyond knocking the rough edges off.  Seems another Member posted about making up a test stock.  Good Luck!  David

The length of pull was 11-1/2” on the original I had (it was cut down at some point).  The length of pull on the new stock was 14” to fit an average adult.

I didn’t adjust anything on the receiver tangs.  The angle of the stock through the wrist was the same.  2-3” seems like you are adding a lot, but it really isn’t that much change.

Another option is to add a wood “recoil pad” to the stock.  The picture is a piece of Katalox I added to the butt of a maple rifle stock.  The first picture is before I applied aqua fortis to the maple.  The second is after aqua fortis and linseed oil, but doesn’t show the butt addition very well. The grain on the Katalox runs vertically, and is checkered to make it “non-slip.”

2nd on the “Try Stock”. Anything I shape by eye start with a sketch then roughed out pattern . Step three is the finished job. Saves error, less effort and difficulty

Even made a pattern for a 6 lb Sledgehammer handle last week. Have 3 lb & 10 lb. Already handled very different shapes and dims. Nice old 6 lb driving head came to me & wanted it right. Played around with the pattern & came out fine. Fits are very personal most tools. Rifle fit critical.

Anybody remember Chuck Blenders Miller Schuetzen rifle .

Morning coffee time to ramble,

Add on’s very common with shotgun shooters. Length of pull, buttplate angle, cheek piece height. Sometimes altered used as a pattern most times not. If your favorites stock is rough, not collector quality, altering probably good solution. No inletting basic shape already set.

To raise a comb split the stock into two haves lengthwise just above the top tang through to the buttplate. Glue in a strip right thickness to elevate the comb desired amount.

Then make the length adjustment  adding after the comb has  been raised. Next finish the strip width down to match the original comb top and stock bottom, butt extension finished to match same way.

Saves the comb and bottom shape.
