Rechambering a 38-55

Print Post
I have an opportunity to purchase a very nice HW in 38-55.  I already own a nice Borchardt, that is chambered in 38-50 Remington.

Would it be possible to rechamber the 38-55 to 38-50?  In my Lyman reloading manual #50 the 38-50 dimensions appear bigger enough to clean up nicely.  It would be about the same $$$ as buying a set of 38-55 dies and finding brass; and save me the hassle of having both to deal with.

Why mutilate a nice, collectible rifle?  The drop in value will more than cover the price of the dies and brass.

Doubly agree.  Destruction of original material just because you can is arrogant and a loss of history.

Besides the collector value issue......

Because of the difference in taper to the body, I think you would need to set the barrel back. Easy way to tell is if you can drop a 38-55 case in your 38-50.

Going over your posts it appears you came into money like you've never had and are buying many nice rifles. You post about coming to matches but you never do.Why waste the money and ruin a nice rifle you will never shoot?

Had to say it... Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

If I hear another  millenial use the term "node" or "optimal " at the range I'll scream!!!

Rich, AKA ISS, there's a good Schuetzen match at Glasgow MT this weekend.
Pack some of that new to you artillery in the car and come over and shoot with us. Bring a muzzle loader and a .22 also.

The BBQ at Mikes place on the lake is worth the trip alone.  Starts Friday.

Insufficient data, for you guys.  Let's try this again.

I have a HW action, that has been re-casehardened,  that has been rebarreled, and a new set of stocks fitted.

Parts rifle.  Now, if it were like my Stevens-Pope, fitted at the Stevens factory to a Ballard action...

“O wad some Pow'r the giftie gie us
To see oursels as ithers see us!”

Do what you want with the gun if its an assembled gun and you arent hurting anything for posterity. The 38-55 is pleasant to shoot, light in recoil and can be 90% of the 38-50. Just like the 38-50 can be 90% of the 40-65 if you push it. Pushing any cartridge to the limit of what it can do often takes away from what the cartridge really does well. If the only reason you want to cut it to 38-50 is because you already load for that caliber- well you arent going to find much support for that logic around here. I bet there are lots of people on here that could load for 15-20+ cartridges tonight. When I started collecting single shots I bought lots of guns that were just OK. As time went on I bought a couple guns that were really really good and got a lot more pleasure out of those.  I would rather have coffee with a collector that really has a lot of knowledge and one or two good guns then a guy with little knowledge and lots of OK guns. Ive been blessed to be mentored by some wonderful collectors with wonderful collections and the best advice I ever got was buy and read ten books before you buy one gun.

I would leave it alone and shoot both rifles as is.  The 38-55 in the longer case is a great round.
