I was cleaning some rifles I haven’t fired in years, got out the hiwall and decided it would be fun to shoot it next trip to the range. I have lost all my notes for it. I have been shooting 13-13.5 gr of IMR4227 in my 8.15x46 German schuetzen rifles, does 14-14.5 gr 4227 seem about right for a 201 gr Barnett? 32-40

out today shooting my 32-40 Hoch HW with a Clerke Spitzer 210g with 14.8 H4227. Marvelous results. Best group shown but others pretty darn good.

BEAUTIFUL RIFLE YOU HAVE THERE

When I bought it from Jerry Barnett in 1984 for $300 it was a thick side HiWall 219 Zipper single trigger. I sent it to Paul Shuttleworth to have all the metal work done and a DST installed. I have never liked the stock, not enough drop.

What a sweetheart!  When Paul was doing a lot of that type of work (before he became so tied up with CPA) he did some spectacular work.  You’re right about the stock though… pretty is as pretty does, and if it doesn’t fit you, it’s just not right.

That 4227 load you mention is very close to one I got with a Bud Welch built 32-40 Ruger #1. As I recall (after 15+ years) it used a 200 grain Welch bullet and about 14 or so grains of 4227 in fixed ammo for some of the most accurate fixed ammo I’ve ever shot in that caliber.

I think you’ll enjoy it, misfit stock notwithstanding, and if not, the line to buy it forms here behind me!  Wink
