I made this years ago to align the milling machine quill to the bed. The contact points are ground. Fast. Accurate. It fit in a 7/8 collet. (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Looks like it would work, but why not tram the head in with a dial indicator which also allows you get the vise square to the table travel?

I used to use a dial indicator. This is faster! I place paper under each of the contact points to see which one is touching. I then adjust until the 'feel' of the paper movement is the same. I do east and west, lock down, and then north and south.

You can do North and South?  I'm jealous as my little Mill only does East and West.  Fast and Simple, I like it 👍.  David
