rechambering a Ballard

Got a Marlin Ballard in .38 long. Am considering drilling, lining and rechambering in .38-40 (because I already own a rifle in that caliber so improved logistics). Would this be safe? To the best of my knowledge the receiver is cast.
Also, dos anyone know if a new edition or even a reprinting of Ballard : the Great American Rifle is in the works? Cost, if you can find one it $$$$$$.
Thanks!

Yeah, I'd be willing to go $200 to $300 but $400, for as much as I'd use it, to me is more $$$$$ than I'm willing to spend. I'd rather put it toward another gun or parts... Smiley
but thanks for the reply.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I personally would not rebarrel and chamber a #2 cast Ballard for .38-40 cartridge. Even if you take care to load mild loads, there's no telling what someone in the future will do.
I'd consider either making it into a .22LR Ballard, or leaving it as a .38 Long.
