Haenel System Aydt Question

I just got this lovely thing and noted that there is a dovetailed flat toward the breech end with numbers.  I assume that is is for some sort of sight.  Is that so?  Can anyone elucidate?

I have a junk Aydt with the same marks. Some schuetzen rifles have a movable barrel sight as well as the tang sight. The marks are probably range marks. Perhaps 100, 200, 300 meters with a specific load.

What does a barrel sight look like.  New one on me.

BTW for a 8.15x46mm would a 30-30 case have to be resized down it's entire length?

Thanks.

Someone told me not to dry fire and not to store cocked.  Wondering if that is true.

I never store any rifle cocked, on many DST rifles you can hold the firing trigger back when closing the action to uncock the action.

Push the rear trigger forward while closing the action to de-cock.

The Achilles heel of the system Aydt is the main spring. Never leave cocked and never dry fire.

I believe that marks the location for the barrel mounted rear sight.

Yes.  When the brass is the same price, I prefer to use .32 Winchester Special.  It's already .32 caliber.

And it will need to be shortened.

Are you going to shoot ring-stop bullets?

It’s my understanding that there are matches in Germany that forbid the use of peep sights.  Only v-notch barrel sights can be used.  The dovetail base is so the rear sight can be slid back and forth for the best focus for the shooter’s eyesight.

Incidentally, does the "6/25" number on the underside of the barrel indicate month/year of manufacture?

Month and year of proofing, I think, though that should also give you at least "ballpark" for when it was made.

That would be my guess, most dates on the schuetzen rifles I’ve seen have the month and year separated by a comma, but that doesn’t mean they all do. Post that picture on the GGCA forum for more information.

Sometimes but there were several matches that required the use of a feld( field) sight which was basically their version of a military sight match, usually in addition to regular match schedule.

The feld target was shot at 300 meters. It was an elongated target taller than it was wide with scoring rings. I have been trying to find an image of one without success. Only open barrel sights were allowed.
