310 Martini BP load ideas

Print Post
Hi Guys
I have a friend who I do casual target shooting with at our local range who has a .310 Martini Cadet which he shoots BP and cast bullets in. He does not seem to be having much success accuracy wise with  groups in the 7" range at 100 m.
The rifle has the original open sights on it so that could be a big part of the problem.
As he does not post here I thought I would do it for him. Just looking for recommendations for loads to try, using BP and lead bullets. I will pass on any info to him to try.
Mike.

You have posted in the classifieds,  you might try the reloading section to get more responses.

Not to disagree, but COTW (10th) shows 6grs of BP with a 120gr lead bullet to be a factory load.

As far as I know, it was indeed exclusively a nitro cartridge.  Charge of 5.5 grs of cordite, and later of  6 grs cadet neonite.

It was also my thought that the original 310 was loaded with cordite, however we shoot here in a BP only club so it has to be BP.
Looks like I posted my question in the wrong area as well, the joys of old age. If anyone can move my question to the reloading section I would be grateful as mu computer skills are below zero.

Does your friend clean between shots?  If not, that's a good reason.  The lube also might be an issue.

My friend does clean between shots using a flexible rod, looks pretty awkward but seems to work ok.
I have no idea what bullet lube he uses but its probably not all that critical if he cleans after every shot anyway.
For my education what size groups could one reasonably expect at 100m anyway when using BP and open sights ?, perhaps his 8" groups are as good as it gets, no idea.
Cheers
Mike.

Smaller calibres are primadonna's with BP, even when cleaning between shots.  I can get spectacular accuracy out of my 30-20, but only when using the right cleaning routine.  My rifle needs 2 moist, 2 dry, and even more, patches of the right thickness and size.  Otherwise I will have fliers.
Prelubing the bore will also help in getting the 1st shot to POA.  At least in mine  Wink
Funny thing, the previous barrerl/chamber was much less sensible to it - either chamber configuration or rifling configuration, not sure....

We have a club member who loads 16 gns of wano 2P (could be 3P)  with a Spartan hard cast pill, the green ones, and does fairly well, uses one wet patch and then one dry.

On a good day with my .310 I can get  3" (+/-) at 100 yds with aperture sights. This with smokeless powder, I have not tried black.

Thanks for the suggestions which I will pass on, I suggested to my friend that he should get a set of aperture sights for the rifle but he didn't want to go to that expense just for casual shooting.
Cheers

Tell him not to bother Mike, I've seen so many buy these because they're cheap and want them to be a BPCR. They're a PITA, you basically have to clean from the muzzle which puts crap into the action, then you have to dismantle and clean the action everytime you shoot it. A pull through sort of works but not well enough. His best chance at accuracy is to load a full case of 3f and muzzle load the bullet.  Make up a case with a piece of dowel or brass rod to stop the bullet in the correct position. Don't M/L on top of a loaded case.  I know one who even loaded 4f. Good luck. 👍

Not really, a nylon or Delrin cleaning rod will allow you to wipe from the chamber end.  I do it all the time on my 30-20 match rifle.  It does work, even with a tang sight.
