The .38 Longs I use are made of shortened .38 Spl cases with a heeled, outside-lubricated bullet.

The shell is a little over an inch long, IIRC.  Check Cartridges of the World for specs.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Yes, since it's the .38 Long, not Extra Long, it can be made from cheap .38 Special brass. Need to order a heeled mold from Accurate or NEI to make the proper sized larger bullets. Keep loads down at mild .38 Special load levels as the cast action wont handle anything hot.

Not sure NEI is in business any longer. I think Walts daughter and husband ran it for a bit out if Texas on the last go.

If I hear another  millenial use the term "node" or "optimal " at the range I'll scream!!!

Could be. I haven't bought from them in years. My .32L, .38L and .44L all came from NEI, but back when Walt was alive and was only about 25 miles away from me.

Bernie Rowles at Old West Bullet Moulds also makes them for heeled bullets.

1+ for Old West moulds.  Bernie made me a heeled hollow base mould for my circa 1972 colt 1851 navy .36 which I installed a kirst ctg.  Conv. Cyl. In .38 long colt.  It is a tack driver at 25 yds.
