Bubba and the German Martini

Yes, Bubba did his magic on this one. Bubba Parkenfarker.

The rifle is not marked as such but I will assume it started as 8.15X46R. Someone, not the maker, stamped 30-30 on it. Then I'm guessing someone, a second cousin to Bubba, reamed the chamber with a 30-40 reamer and stamped over the caliber stamp with a 40.  But that didn't work because the neck in the newly reamed chamber was to small so someone....., reamed the neck of the chamber to .345. A wee bit to large for the .316 groove bore.

Here are pictures of the throat with a tight fitting shell seated in the chamber. The bore is in very good condition and I plan to make the rifle perform accurately again.  I find these sorts of projects fun and challenging.
The Teslong bore scope sure came in handy for this one.

that's pretty awful,
How long is the barrel on this one?
Can we see a pic of the rifle itself?

The Parkenfarker gene tree cases a long shadow but not much shade as it doesn't branch. There should be a 4473 to buy tools especially anything that can be used to abuse a gun.  As Einstein remarked once " The only difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits" Good luck with your project  to resurrect a Bubba victim.

If you get those two little pieces of lead out, it should shoot fine Wink

Nothing a throat and .014” thick brass won’t fix.

Must have been the same guy who rechambered my Stigele martini to 32 Winchester Spcl., so far off that a fired case has to be oriented as it was extracted or it won’t chamber.

Here is the rifle.  The sights are being swapped out.  It did shoot well as is with a shortened 30-40 case and a stop ring bullet

neat rifle- makes me wonder why it got messed with in the first place. Even Bubba must have days he lets things alone. Maybe? Undecided

I think the rifle landed right smack dab in the middle of Parkenfarkerville when it crossed the big pond.  Back then they didn't know anything about German target rifles or their calibers.  So they fixed it and fixed it till something fit in the chamber and went kapow.  Someone drove a stove bolt into the threaded hole for the diopter with glue. That was fun removing from the threads. I had a nice diopter that happens to fit perfect.

The picture Jack posted is the auction picture I think.  It looks great in the picture but it has it's rough spots.  When it's back up and shooting I'm going to shoot it in some matches.  I can hardly wait.  Smiley

I got busy yesterday and piloted a tapered pin reamer then went about the tedious job of reaming the throat.

The short cartridge is what was being used in the rifle and the long one is what's being used now. All I did today was fire form a few shells.

Lots of lead chunks came out during the reaming process. So with the longer cartridge the bullet is being fired down the bore only instead of the the neck of the chamber.

Looking good Wes!  I guess the question now is what to do with all that shortened brass that took me some time to modify.  I wonder if they could he converted to something useful.

Thanks Jack. Yes they can be converted to 40-50SS. Nothing lost.   Smiley

Do you have a 40-50?   If not it would be a good excuse to build one.  Maybe a roller!
