Using Black Powder with breech seated bullet? (Read 727 times)

	Want to try black powder in my 33-47 Win. Highwall. Can I still breech seat bullet 0.050" ahead of case with black powder? Do I use a mostly full case with a wad of some sort and not worry about air gap or do I have to seat the bullet in the case with no air gap? What about a duplex load? Currently use 4227. Thanks for any information.

	cdog After much experimenting I can state that you can shoot straight black or duplex loads, breech seated, much as you would do with smokeless. IMR 4227 is an excellent choice for duplexing with black. Seating 0.050 ahead of case mouth should work well. You will likely have to wipe the bore between shots even with duplex. In order to shoot dirty (not cleaning between shots) usually requires using an oleo wad in the mouth of the cartridge case. I my book "The Golden Age of the American Schuetzenfest" I go into details on shooting and the accuracy I achieved using techniques in vogue at the turn of the 20th century. That book covers Schuetzen history, c.1890-1917, how the old matches were conducted and much more. It's worth a read. The small air gap is not a problem with black or duplex. That loading method was common in the old Schuetzen days. Good luck with your shooting and please keep us informed of our results.

	Even if you are an experienced shooter, there is much you can enjoy and learn in Mr. Wright's The Golden Age of the American Schuetzenfest. If you don't already own a copy, I strongly suggest that you treat yourself to one. Bill Lawrence

	Thank you for the reply! I must admit, one year ago when I bought your book, I glossed over the black powder parts because I had no intention of using BP. Thanks for reminding me! I'm rereading the complete book. Charlie W.

	Breach seating with a small air gap will work well. In most rifles I probably have a 0.050" or so gap, but in one of mine ( shooting PP bullets ) I breech seat about 1/8" ahead of the case mouth with straight BP and it works very well. Chris.
