Neat an interesting photo. Lots of Ballard's on the line that look like they all have custom stocks built for them. I wonder who the gunsmith was in the area that did the work.

All the "perch belly" stocks look like the work Henry Simmons, who I believe made stocks for his own customers as well as for Schoyen. Also, I note that every blessed rifle appears to have a palm rest. Does the picture's 1909 date help zero in on when palm rests became popular?

Well, maybe at least in Colorado.

A couple of those palm rests are quite "robust".

Reminiscent of some of the Milwaukee area palm rests?

In my experience Milwaukee-area palm rests are more Germanic-looking - squat, nonadjustable, much like the one Jeff's Outfitters sells that's made by Pedersoli (

I'm sorry that I wasn't more explicit. In addition to those features already mentioned, my idea of the usual "Milwaukee style" palm rest screws directly into the forearm or sometimes into the front of the action - i.e., it also doesn't swing out of the way.
Referencing the photo, it's possible that the first man on the left - the one with the Maynard (?) - and the fellow in the dark suit and wearing the derby may have a simplified version of what I'm trying to describe.
Perhaps someone more computer literate than I can go to Jeff's Outfitter's website, copy the photo of the Pedersoli palm rest I reference above, and post it here.
I also think some of the Overbaugh "German Pattern" rifles were fitted with a Germanic-style rest, either screwed into the action or attached to the barrel via a clamp like the one on a rifle
Westerner
owns.

I was referencing the man at the right and the tall guy! Somewhat outsized compared to most of the others, which appear small to me. Although I like a smaller shape, in spite of having large hands. It's a personal thing.

The two gentlemen I pointed out, seem to have solidly mounted rests, as you mention. Schoyen's Denver shop is a long way from Ouray, but matches were held and well attended in a lot of smaller town/cities, so shooters would be aware of Schoyen's influence, and Simmons stock making abilities.

I never knew our Stanley to have a mustache; that was Ollie's thing.
