I am shooting a 512 grain Accurate Moulds  bullet with a large meplat in my 50-70 and that is about all I want.  I would not think anything heavier shot in a 50-90 would be fun to shoot!  Also I have found 16:1 alloy the best as especially 30:1 with smokeless loads leads bad!  Tom

I, too, have heard bad things about using necessarily small charges of smokeless in large BP cases.  Any truth in that at all?  Are there precautions that should be followed?

I had a 50-90 Sharps that Bill Bagwell built for me many years ago. He said just fill it up with 1F & top it off with that flat nose RCBS bullet. We had a lot of fun with that rifle & rang a lot of steel plates.
Once I lost a deer that I'd shot due to the smoke. Considered going to smokeless but never did.

The bullet I am using in my 50/70 is Accurate 51-504L.  It was designed to fit my rolling block as I have no freebore to speak of.  The beauty of Accurate moulds is that you can change any of the designs to fit your rifle and needs.  I have a 0.512/0.502 barrel with 24 twist and wanted a large meplat for hunting.  Hard alloys will not expand but with the  large meplat they do not need to.  As for powder, I use Accurate #5744 powder or Shooter's World Buffalo powder in many of my old large capacity cases.  Near as I can tell the powders are essentially the same and if you can find it, Buffalo Powder is cheaper.  Tom

Another good one is a RCBS 50-515  that casts at .513 and 540 grains with Buffalo Rifle  powder at 30 grains. It a a very good load and you can use 5744 data  with BR Powder.

Seems like people are getting off track here. 50-90 2F would do well.

Not a 50-90 but in my 50-70 Gov. and 50-95 wcf the ffg Swiss has worked great . I started using  Old Eynsford Goex  1.5 F and the two rifles seem to like it also . Having used them both , I would try the 1.5 F  first . Your rifle will show what it likes best . Good luck enjoy the ride .
