I bought this today at an auction for $160
It's a 22lr and described as "a homemade rifle"
Any idea what it is?
Also, how much are gunshops in your area charging to do a transfer?

It looks European to me, not some home made item. The gun shop near me charges $35 to transfer. Another nearby charges $40.

yes, not homemade. the buttstock fits too well, and certainly the receiver and action
Maybe the barrel and forearm.
the lever is less than elegant.
the barrel finish is not very good, but the edges are crisp,
the front sight sure looks like a 17a
the breechblock looks too short, perhaps it was a centerfire and the owner made the RF block and put on a 22 barrel
I thought for the price I'd take a chance. (like I need another 22) it's a sickness.

Looks like the same action sold today as the Haenel KK. Compare to this vintage one on Gunbroker: German FLZ System AYDT Single Shot Rifle 22 LR Fritz Langenhan Zella Mehlis

IMHO it's a put together. The stocks are definitely homemade. It's hard to tell from the pictures but it looks like the top center section is separate from the rest of the receiver (IE 2 piece receiver). The top section looks factory to me and the "receiver proper" home made. Pins are too 'proud" to be factory to me. Barrel looks factory and probably "fit" to the receiver. Just my 2 cents for whatever that is worth. In any event interesting and I would have paid 160 for it just to examine.

yes, it does look like a sideplate. I'll have some fun with it.

I saw that one. No reason that a good gunsmith with better than average machinist skills couldn't build that action. His stock finishing skills still need some work, but who am I to judge?

It's a commercial action but I do not remember who made them.

I have one a lot like it, I believe it is a system Will. I will do a little research later and post. Little doubt it is pre WWII German. Look under the forend for proof marks, but not all rifles were proofed, especially those made before 1893.

It appears to have a hole in the receiver top for the rear sight, awfully common on European rifles. Neat buy!

I called the auction house to say it was an antique recently. The auctioneer said he'd check it with his experts. They called last Friday to say it wasn't so I called my LGS and asked him to send his FFL. He asked what it was, I told him it was described as a homemade gun, but it was a modified German Schuetzen. I sent the LGS some pics. He called the auctioneer for a better description and long story not so short, they cancelled the sale.
It's not like I need another gun, recently I bought a military Borschardt, a #2 roller in 22, and a Hammerli 100 free pistol, but you guys know how it is.

How very small-minded. And though I'm sorry you won't get that rifle, I'm, 1), glad you won't be dealing with that bunch and. 2). sure something even more fun will come your way.
