CPA thoughts. .30-40 Krag, Loop lever

I've decided to order another CPA, this time a silhouette gun.  I'm contemplating adding an extra barrel in .30-40 Krag just for fun.  Anyone have one?  If so how do you like it.  How accurate is it with jacketed bullets?

I'm also considering the loop lever rather than the ball & spur as it seems like it'd be better for prone shooting.

Chris.

I bought a used Shiloh in 30/40 with a 34 inch barrel, took 3 days to get the copper out, tried cast ,shot wonderful. Took it to my friends shop and cut 4 inches off the barrel faced it and crowned it, will shoot bowling pins all day at 300 yds with lyman 311284 ,210 grain bullet.

I have a CPA  silhouette rifle and had the ball and spur on it, I did not like it at all for shooting prone. To me it just seemed to put my hand at an odd and uncomfortable angle. I took it back up to the shop and had them install the loop lever and its much more comfortable.

As I read this thread, I am thinking that I should get my Ruger No 1, Obermeyer SS 28" barrel, 30 USA/Krag out of the back of the safe and get to exercising it with the 242 grain NOE bullet
and the 230 grain Lee in addition to the classic 311284. Also, the Lyman 301620, 200 gr Paper Patch bullet.
The barrel is 8.5 twist.
My original intent with this rifle was to work with  with BP
as well as smokeless loads

I have a CPA 30/40 barrel. It’s a good one and a good cartridge. Face of it 30/40 case capacity about the same as .308. I don’t load mine to 308 velocity. Action and extractor don’t have the leverage of a bolt action & can get difficult to open with hot loads. No matter they don’t  need to be hot to shoot well. It’s a wonderful gas check cast bullet or 168 gr match king shooter.

I had a loop lever once, even though I shoot a lot of Lever actions did not like the loop. Ball and spur suits me better. It’s a easy switch though try one.

One of my favorite "poking around rifles" is a Shiloh #1 Business Rifle in 30 US Govt.  28" barrel that is a serious rock crusher with 308284 Lyman U (undersized) single cavity that casts a nice .309" out of 20:1 alloy with 1% antimony added.

The Krag is very accurate, easy on the shoulder at about 1700fps, and just a real joy out chasing Rockchucks this time of year.

Was not the "old" nomenclature for U.S. .30 military cartridges ".30 Army" for .30-40 Krag and ".30 Gov't" for .30-06?

A single shot .30-40 is on my to-do list also. Always wanted a High Wall in that cartridge. Just what I need, another hunting rifle as I'm winding down my hunting. My current Krag, a Griffin&Howe clone, will have to suffice until then. It dearly loves the 311284 + 20 gr. 4759.

I have one of the Italian "Cimarron High Walls" in .30 Army.  After the first few shots with jacketed bullets, I gave it a buttstock from a Winder.  That improved it as a practical shooter.  Just has an ordinary lever.  Accuracy is OK, only has iron sights (MVA tang, 17A front) but my eyes are in their 80s.

Trigger is OK, but the rifle is quite heavy.  Barrel weight would make it a candidate for lead bullet experiments.   Too heavy & too long for anything but still hunting.

If I were looking for a .30 Army switch barrel for hunting, I'd ask a lot of questions about external dimensions of the barrel.
