Help Identifying Old Single Shot Rifle

Picked this up at auction a while back because it intrigued me. I have been unable to ID it and any help would be appreciated. Single shot, .44 RF, manual extractor, steel forearm, the falling block drops by cocking the hammer (IE trigger guard is not a lever), only markings are serial number on receiver, forearm, and barrel (19). It has a Frank Wesson look to me, but I have only ever seen the 2 "trigger" models made by Wesson. Thoughts?

More Photos, since I only seem to be able to figure out how to attach 2 at a time.

The extractor reminds me of early Ballards and Wesson pocket pistols.  But the action is certainly different.  Are you implying that when you pull the trigger, the hammer moves forward as the block simultaneously rises, the latter arriving fully in position just before the hammer hits the firing pin?  If so, it would seem that a little gunk and/or wear could make for dangerous in-your-face excitement.

Yes, the block lowers when the hammer is cocked and raises only when the trigger is pulled and the hammer travels forward. I agree, not saying I am going to shoot it and probably why it's not a well know rifle.

Vaguely reminds me of Dexter Smith design style, and the overly complex alternative to do something covered by somebody else's patent would fit his mode of operation.

Thanks for the lead, I'll dig into Dexter Smith, whom I have never heard of.

i have a gun made by theodore bartley of dresden ny, patent date is oct.5 1880. you pull the hammer back, the block lowers, load cartridge a 40-70.pull the trigger and the block rises to just before the hammer strikes it is locked up.the gun is near new and i know why,i wouldn't pull the trigger looking at the back side of a 40 calibre cartridge.    tony<><

Perhaps pull the trigger on a primed case first faithful son! I have witnessed way to many "Watch This" with bad outcomes.  A trial run or two at times is worthwhile.

An interesting rifle, good luck with discivering its origins.

.44 rimfire brass can be made from several different centerfire cases, depending on chamber dimensions. I'm made it from .41 magnum brass for an early #2 rolling block, and from .44-40 for an 1860s  Ballard.  Both are great fun to shoot.
