I recently bought a Uberti Low Wall in 38-40 and was wondering if anybody here ever tried to make an accurate 200 yard target rifle in this chambering. The 40-60 Winchester shot a 210 grain .403 bullet and I thought if the slow twist of the 38-40 would stabilize this heavier bullet it would probably do better than the standard 180 grain bullet at 200 yards. What are your thoughts?

I shot my 38-40 Uberti lever gun at cowboy silhouette.  It didn't do so well at the 200 yard rams until I had it re-lined with a 1-16 twist TJ liner.  Things improved greatly, especially when I used 190 cast bullets.

I had a feeling the 1-38 twist would be the fly in the ointment. Uberti uses a 1-20 twist for the 44-40, it would have been nice if they used the same for the 38-40.I'm still going to get dies and a heavier bullet mold and do some experimenting. Thanks for the feedback 38-72. By the way, I have a nice old flatside 95 Winchester with an octagon barrel in 38-72-great gun and great caliber.
